The shop said "the Pioneers were not midrange"? That statement makes no sense; I would consider a different radio shop.
I may have misunderstood, I am not a stereo guy.. now that I am starting to get a slight grasp on this, I think they may have been telling me that the Pioneers were mid-range, and that the stock/factory speakers in the back seat were not? I am assuming the back seat speakers are amp'd and intended more for the lows, and that the Pioneers were not designed for that?
Will that work? Just direct swap the door speakers with the db651's and the sail panel speakers with the db6501's, using all of the stock wiring and amps?
Again, we would need to know which factory system you have before we could bring out the jump to conclusions mat. Take off the panel that covers the spare tire. Take a look back there for a tiny *** factory amp just forward of the tire. (Like 10"x6" in size)
And the woofer that comes with the Polk component set is nothing special. Basically the same as the co-axil db651 minus the tweeter. I wouldn't bother returning what you have now to get those. And I certainly wouldn't put factory equipment back in. While I don't entirely mind how they sound, they drop like flies. They're always the first thing to go. They're just low quality stock crap. I have some other speakers in mind that would fit back there, but A) I dont know how much you really want to spend B) you're planning to add sub(s), so low frequency output from that location may not be at the top of the list anyway.
Hook them up and tell us what you think. Add in the sub(s). You plan on keeping that factory tape deck too? I know they've become a collector's item and all, but the Smithsonian has already bought my old one. So don't think you're gonna make much money off it.:)

I pulled off the panel that covers the spare tire as you suggested. There is a black plastic gaurd mounted in front of the tire with what feels like a small amp mounted on the backside of that.

My current plan was to simply replace the stock speakers. The ones in there are ripped up and rattle, but the stock ones in my wife's firebird sound nice with a good bit of bass for stock speakers. So, at this point I just want good sound with a speaker swap.
Later, in the near future I plan to redo the wiring (but wish to keep whatever speakers I put in right now) because I will put a PC in the back, and a touchscreen in the front instead of running a stereo. This will allow me to run MP3 playlists, GPS, wireless browsing, etc.. At this point I will need to put an amp in too, because I will need to run the audio from the PC to the amp and then out to the speakers. I will probably go ahead and put a couple 10 or 12 inch subs in the back too.
But for now.. I just want to replace the stock speakers with speakers that will sound better than stock speakers. I obviously don't want to replace them with speakers that have less quality or sound than the stock speakers. I do not expect huge amounts of bass, but the stock speakers have some bass, and obviously the audio shop didn't think the pioneer's would sound better than the speakers that are in the back/sails, so they just put the pioneers in the front to replace the bad speakers.

I want to be sure the speakers will do what I want before I open them. I already have $100 into the pioneers that I just had put in, and those will end up sitting on a shelf collecting dust if the audio store doesn't take them back for a full refund.
I will use the original HU for now, but will replace it with a computer system later. I have no interest in selling the original HU. I will box it up and if/when I sell the car in the future, the radio will be given too the buyer.
You already have the Pioneer's installed in the front right? Any you're happy with them? So it's just the rear seat speakers we're actually worrying about. You're thinking about putting the Polk's you bought from Circuit City in that location right? So put the Polk's in. Circuit City will take back anything that's not all jacked-up within 30 days. Take a minute to install them and give them a few days. Happy with the results? Not enough low end? Return the Polk's and buy some real 6 1/2" subwoofers to go there. (~$140, D4 version) http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_...products_id=33
Yep, that's the device. So, now I know I have a monsoon system. Thank you.
Also, I did some research on the eD subs you suggested and they seem to be exactly what I am looking for. They (D4) wire up directly and sound good with the monsoon amp according to several forums. They are almost a direct mount, though it appears they need a little spacer, which is no issue for me.
They can be rewired to an aftermarket amp once I install a carpc, and I read they will sound even better.
I think these fit the bill. Thank you again.
I think I will return two of the Polk DB651's, and keep the other two for the door panels. I will order the eD's after the 25th (they are on backorder at this moment)
I used to run polk's in my car untill recently (from 2002 till may of 2008). I really like polk audio but they don't have any low'end. Once I added the polk momo sub's it was overall okay, but I had a really weak amp barely juice'ing the subs.
My previous setup:
Clarion Headunit BD216 (Cheap)
Polk 6 1/2 " DB650
Polk 6 1/2 " DB65000
Polk MOMO 12" Sub's x2
BAJA BA400 2 Channel Amp (Very very very cheap)
The polk 6 1/2's sounded great because I don't listen to a lot of bass, but when I played hip hop music they sounded awful because there was no low end at all. The Subwofer's I hooked up later, but the 6 1/2's by themselves dont put much out.
I switched over to Kicker recently and am extremely pleased :)
So how do you like your setup? Specifically the 7kv.2 subs? How was the install?
I ordered the 7kv.2 subs on May 21st. They were backordered until May 25th. I was given excuse after excuse.. including "The last of the parts required for us to assemble your subs are sitting in a truck, broke down one hour from us with a flat tire. We should have the subs shipped tomorrow" (that was a couple weeks ago)
The subs actually just arrived today (June 12th) so I will need to pick up some material to make the spacers out of. I will hope that the wait was worth it.
Ken, how long do you think those speakers will be on sale? I'm getting tired of my cheapys
The Polk's? They're on sale quite often. Not "always", but pretty damn often. The sales run Sunday through Saturday. If you miss it, no worries. Wait a week. It'll probably be back.

I hope your install goes well and the speakers sound just how you want them
I got them installed last night and I tested them today on the way to work and back. I listen to a variety of music from AC/DC and Motley Crew to Metallica and Megadeth, from Akon to 50 Cent. It performed as well as I hoped. I have enough bass running off the stock head unit and monsoon amps to get my mirrors shaking! :) I can imagine it will be even better on an aftermarket head unit and amp, but for now.. I am perfectly happy with the speakers.
