So I installed a Sony Xplod Headunit in my car last October. Up until quite recently, my headunit will turn off whenever it feels like it. It will either flicker on and off, or it will stay off for a couple of minutes.
I've had people tell me its either a bad battery, or a bad ground wire somewhere, but to be honest, if it was a ground wire, I have no idea where to start looking.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks
Jim

Do a search on BCM. It's located behind your glove box, and when they start to go bad it cuts power to things it controls, like your radio, and power windows.
If it was a ground wire that is loose, remove your headunit and check your connections, make sure they are properly connected and secure.
Also check the plug that connects to your Sony Xplod, sometimes the pins that connect the wires to the plug come loose and cause problems like this.

Sony as a whole has gone down hill as of late. I too had a Sony HU, doing the same thing you say... plus, my sub output would crackle and pop.
Being in broadcast, I deal with a lot of Sony gear. This year, I have lost 3 Sony DVD burners, had to replace the head assembles on two cameras and had a DVCAM VTR, rated at 5000 hours before a due rebuild, crash after 400 hours of use.

I'm thinking BCM. My pioneer was doing this, i thought it was the unit. Remove the unit, connect it to a outlet on your house. See if it shuts off still. You need to find some sort of 12V thing though. I used a car battery charger. Good luck.
See if you can notice anything else not working when the headunit cuts out. If you determine that every other item that the BCM controls is working properly when the headunit dies, well I guess you can join the rest of us Sony haters.
How often does this happen? If it happens after a couple minutes every single time, try removing the headunit from the car. Pop the hood and extend the ign and batt wires right to the + terminal on your battery. Ground wire to negative terminal. Let it sit there for awhile and play. See what happens.
If you have a multimeter, remove the headunit and wiring harnesses from the car. Test for battery voltage at the stock harness. Once you find it, have a friend hold the test probe in place while you guys take a ride. See if it ever drops +12V.
check to see if your windows roll up and down when your headunit shuts off. I actually have an extra bcm if you want it. I bought it off of someone on the forums, but didn't need it. There's an easy way to fix your bcm if it is bad

Unless you have manual windows, it's harder to tell this way.
From what ive read / heard, the bcm is a PITA to get to.
The old skool Sony ES line was the good stuff. But I believe they stopped making ES lines when Xplod was first introduced. (I'll take a stab and say 1998-1999ish) The first Xplod line of headunits were TOTAL TRASH. They were one of the first to offer the "ghost" feature where the entire face was button-less and turned completely black when off. (To help deter thieves, thinking the faceplate had been actually removed) These "touch buttons" didn't work/last worth a damn. But worst of all, these headunits skipped like you would not believe. I was simply shocked that ANY manufacture would allow a product like that to be released. To help counter-act the obvious bad reviews their headunits got, they released "G-protection".
They obviously hoped to convince people their headunits with this design no longer skip. I believe this tray feature lasted a single year. Fast forward to the current time, where my shop actually installs Sony headunits on the regular. Cheap. Cheap. Cheap. And that goes for every car audio product with the Sony name on it. The amp's do not do rated power despite carrying the CEA logo and the subs are over priced for what they are. A Kicker Comp is the same price and twice the woofer. And as far as I'm concerned their entire speaker line is equal to Boss, Rockwood, or any other flea market brand out today. Knowing what I know, I would never install a piece of Sony equipment in a friend's car nor would I own a piece myself.

Sony
I can let anyone know how to pull it out. It took a lot of pulling to get it out, but it came out. Also, if anyoen needs theirs fixed, you can ship it to me and pay the shipping back and I'll fix it for them. I also have extra ones, since people were just going to throw them away lol
