  • Monsoon or not 2001 European Camaro

    Hi,

    I have a question.
I am living in the Netherlands, and i have a 2001 3.8V6 Camaro.
This is an Export model, with some "European" adjustments,
Different seats (from the firebird) and different mirrors, and some other some things.

My question is: i want to know, if i do have an Monsoon Stereo,
    The car has 8 speakers.

i made a picture of the radio, and a picture of my service tag.

The service tag has the RPO codes: UL2, UW3, UZ7, U1S and U75

    greetings Patrick

Hi: Yes, U have the "monsoon" radio. U have subwoofers
on the left and right of the back seat, mid range and tweeters
in the left and right door....and "filler" speakers under the rear hatch.
The amp is located in the right rear just above the spare tire.
If you look, on the rear left, open the hatch and look left and in
the nook you can find an open connector for attaching a DVD
changer. On the other end that cable is attached to the "head unit"
in the dash, if you disconnect it you can buy an adapter that will
provide U with Left and Right inputs so you can play an iPod or
Sirius Sat. Radio directly to the Stereo.
While in Amsterdam, I was at the Merel Amsterdam ZOLD-OOST
Chevrolet Dealer and saw the 2001 Camaro on the dealer floor.
I added running lights to my car too. I have a front Swiss plate
on the car now. if you need more information on parts etc

Use the above picture to find the Monsoon amplifier. Open the hatch. Remove the passenger side panel that is covering the spare tire. The small amplifier should be just forward of the tire.

And I believe PalmHarborBlkv6 meant to say CD changer. He is correct though. If you remove the driver's side rear panel and search around a little bit, you should be able to find a harness wrapped in foam and tape. That is a harness for the CD changer. You can either connect a factory Chevy CD changer or buy the iPod adapter PalmHarbor is referring to.

        Hi,

        thanks for the information,
I removed the spare tire, to check it out.
        here are the pictures:

        Still 2 questions:
What is the "shock sensor", i don't see it, what use is it ?
in the rear sail panel (left and right), there are small speakers, is it a factory option to get bigger speakers (with a seperate tweeter) ? see picture.

        greetings Patrick

Well, there's the Monsoon amplifier in the first picture. So you know you have Monsoon now. And you already have the CD changer. Nice.

You can replace those rear speakers if you want, but I don't suggest it. They're too far back. Too far behind the listener. If you want an increase in sound quality, I suggest replacing the front door speakers. Or obviously replacing the entire Monsoon system would be better yet.

i don't want to replace the speakers, i am very happy with the sound,

but i noticed in the rear sail panels, there is some room for a extra tweeter (left and right) see the pictures before.
I have a orginal factory service manual, and there are some pictures of a system with extra tweeters in the back.
Was this an extra option, or so ?

What is the shock sensor ?, has this something to do with the radio ?

Re: Monsoon or not 2001 European Camaro

THE rear speakers by the door are only fed bass
frequency from about 900 to 50hz. A tweeter
will have no value as there will be big gap in the
frequency response from900 to 5000z+hz. The best
thing you can do is add tweeters (with a crossover)
in the black triangle in the upper left of the door.
If you are not handy, don't do it yourself.

in the front doors, locate them in the triangle in the
upper right part of the insidehy

                  http://mods.firebirdv6.com/stereo.html#FBAQ_1

The firebird's had the tweeters with the 4" under the hatch.

And correct. The shock sensor is for an alarm. I don't know why it was labeled in the picture. Just for fun I guess.

EDIT: And it looks like your car is in awesome condition too! Welcome to the board and good buy on the car!

                    hi,
Yes, i am very happy with my Camaro.
He has run only 36.000km (22.000 miles).

I replaced the orginal shocks with Koni's single adjustables (front and rear),
and the orginal swaybars too 1LE swaybars (32mm and 19mm) with bushings and endlinks.
Replaced the orginal tires (215/60/16) with Cooper Zeon 2XS 245/50/ZR16.

I removed the speedlimiter with a Hypertech programmer.

                    The rest is stock.

Nice pics of your export radio. Can you post pics of the car, especially the seats, cluster, rear bumper and mirrors which should be different then USA model? I also like the rear fog-light switch which is non-USA model also.

Re: Monsoon or not 2001 European Camaro

                        hi Wolfgang,

here are some pictures: i don't like the mirrors , maybe i change them with some American ones.
The seats are exact the same as on the Pontiac firebird,
dash is the same, except for the speedometer, km instead of miles.

Seats, mirrors, rear bumper with foglights, turn lights, headlights, and some small things are different from American Camaro´s.

In Europe there was not much to choose: 3.8V6 Camaro or Z28 camaro or Convertible.
Options: leather seats, T-tops, Chrome rims, Metallic paint, CD-changer.
I put a photo of my RPO -codes so you can see what is standard and optional on this Camaro.

I changed my shocks (replaced with adjustable Koni's), replaced my swaybars with SS-bars, bushings and endlinks, removed the speedlimiter with a Hypertech, and replaced the orginal 215/60/R16 tires with 245/50/ZR16 tires.
