  • Opinions on this setup

Hi, everyone. I have a newbie question on car audio, and wanted your thoughts on this setup:

    I already have:
    Sony CDX GT-610UI Head unit
    Sony XT-100HD HD radio receiver
    Bazooka tube 8in sub
    Polk 6.5 for the rears

    I'd like to get:
Polk 6.5 for the fronts/sail panel
    MTX MRP-F250 Amp
    Should I get tweeters?

Does anyone want to offer any opinions? I'm not interested in entering any audio competitions, just casual listening, and the ability to listen to music when outside of my car..ie, when its parked and I'm playing hoops.

    Thanks
    Rick

    Re: Opinions on this setup

You shop at Circuit City don't you?:)

I don't mean to trash your choices, but I sell/install MTX gear for circuit city every single day. I would avoid them. Straight up. Their amps more so than anything else. The JH600 and JH300 especially. They've been dropping like flies in my shop. Had plenty of problems with the 4500-series subs too. But I will be the first to admit, for every person who has terrible problems with a product, there's another person who has had great success with many years of use. So roll the dice if you like, but I know I wouldn't use them myself.

Now with that rant out of the way.... lol.... I see that you said MTX, but gave us a model number for an Alpine. If you meant the Alpine MRP-F250, it's a good choice. Thought about the Polk PA500.4? Keep the Polk theme going.

Polk offers a component set in the dB line. The model number is db6501. If you're going to run an amp, it's the only way to go.:) $199 at Circuit City or probably about $125 off eBay. I've installed many sets of them. (Did one yesterday as a matter of fact) I really like the sound of them. Very natural. Something I have not found in Kicker's or Pioneer's component sets.

      Re: Opinions on this setup

Thanks...I normally try to do extensive research before purchasing, but there's a lot of electronics to learn with amps.

I remembered the amp manufacturer incorrectly; you're right, I was thinking of the Alpine.

I know the components are more, and better, but are the Polk db651 decent for the fronts, and db651s for the sail panels?

Do I also need tweeters? I didn't expect these little speakers to cost so much.

That's why I linked you to the component set. Do components up front (which come with separate tweeters). And the coaxils in the rear. db6501 in front. db651 in rear.

Sucks that you lost your job 96firebird. you seem like one of the few people at circuit city who knew anything about car audio.

I didn't. Circuit closed 155 stores. Mine wasn't one of them...... yet....
