  • running 4 preamps to two speakers.

ok not really to do with a car....heres the question....on my boat, I have 2 speakers (bose marine speakers) have them connected to the rear preamps on my head unit....they can handle alot more power....can I just attach the front preamp outputs from the headunit to the speakers also to get a little more power?? any help is appreciated...oh and my head unit user guide says don't run speakers in parallel...don't think I need to do that though, just need advice on how to wire it...thanks.

edit: not preamps..preamps are rca's I think.....whatever wire that comes from the headunit that powers the speakers directly....no amp.

I probably wouldn't try it unless you know what you're doing.

The speakers you have, what are they (components, 3ways, 2 ways, etc)? I know some HU's will gear the rear outputs towards the lows. You can try and separate the tweeters and woofer on your speakers and then wire them individually (woofer most likely will get the rear wiring).

      speakers are full range bose

just wondering though, I have the fader set to full rear, would that send all the power the HU has to just the rears? or would it keep the front channel power in reserve?

Fading does not increase power output over the rated amount.

Those are 8 ohm speakers? Finding conflicting info online.

I think it goes unsaid that you know this equipment is not intended to do what you're asking. I certainly wouldn't do it if it were mine. But if it's an old headunit you don't really care about, you could try something. Worst that could happen is you'll fry the headunit's internal amp and you'll get nothing out of all four outputs. Just try bridging the LF and LR outputs to the speaker. Ensure the fader is set back to center, then connect the + from the LF and the - from the LR to your left speaker. Same for the right side.

Or spend $50 on a small used amp.:naughty:

after looking around online I found a new one for 40$...prolly just gonna do that....and it's actually a decent headunit...sony marine grade

thanks guys, talked some sense into me ;)

he was talkin amp, not Head unit. You're going to have the same problem if you buy another head unit. I'd either try splitting the speakers up (they're 2 ways, so there should be a tweeter in there) or bridging like 96firebird311 suggested. An amp would be the best way, but I don't know squat about boat electrical, and wouldn't want you to run the battery down and be stranded :P
