can someone please tell me a definiative way to tell if my '98 camaro has a "monsoon" sound system or not-i've gotten different answers from two different local car audio shops-now i'm more confused than when i started-it still has the factory radio & it's giving up the ghost so i'm trying to form a plan of attack for upgrading the whole system-was told; 6 3/4" full range in doors, 6 3/4" in backseat area, only recieving a bass signal (& these sound like crap), & 4"(?) in very back, only getting a high trebbile signal (my bud has '98 firebird & his says monsoon on the face of radio-mine just says theft deterent somethin or nuther) also-does either of the two systems have any kind of amplifier hidden anywhere or just runnin off the head unit? thanks for yall's help

Re: monsoon confusion
One way to tell if it originally had the Monsoon system is to check the RPO codes for one that says UN0. That is the code for the Monsoon system. If your car has it, it should have the 6 1/2" speakers (these could be 6 3/4", I don't remember what the specific size is at the moment), the 6 1/2" sail panel subs (lows only) and the 4" tweeters in the hatch.
To answer your second question, the amp is located against the body in the spare tire/jack area on the passenger side of the hatch.'99 Camaro

Re: monsoon confusion
checked the RPO-yes, it does have the code for Monsoon(UNO) but does not have an amp in that location, there is a small square indention, maybe someone yanked it in the past? i am unfamilliar with these componet type speakers (currently has a set of Infinity's in it at the moment-6 3/4's in door & sail pannel & 4"s in rear), if there is no amp, will a 4 channel amp work? should there also be a rear sub? cause i don't have that either, but there are wires there, maybe what they're supposed to go to? thanks again for the help -btw; just got off phone with crutchfield.com & they said has to be an amp in there somewhere, could there be different locations for amp depending on year?-its raining now, but when i can-i'll dig deeper-see if i can locate amp-he said speakers wouldn't work off just hu alone if amp was m.i.a.??Last edited by heavychevy383; 08-19-2009, 07:45 PM.

are you wanting to upgrade the system, or basically just change headunits?

Re: monsoon confusion
i just checked the passenger side before it came a bad storm-will have to check drivers side tomorrow after work in daylight-yeah, basicly just lookin to upgrade to a head unit that actually "plays" the cd's instead of throwing them back at me!(ha,ha) but just wanting to consider my options for future upgrades-i'm used to restoring old chevys-this new stuff is cool but i'm on a bit of a learning curve so i really appriciate all ya'lls help-still kind of afraid of touching the wrong thing & eating the airbag!(ha,ha!)Last edited by heavychevy383; 08-19-2009, 08:14 PM.

Re: monsoon confusion
the amp in a 98 camaro is located in the passenger side spare tire area, you'r not going to find it on the drivers side anymore
they are really easy to miss, i can take my panel off and take a picture of the amp if you would like
