  • brake/e brake question

hey guys, i have been having a grinding type noise in my rear that i think may be the brakes rubbing

first off my brake pads in the back arent wearing normally.. last time i changed the back brakes, one pad looked almost new while the other pad was completely gone

when i changed it, the piston pushed back perfectly fine, and IIRC it was the inside pad that was worn, while the outside pad was fine, on both sides. I have not checked them lately, but im assuming it is going to be the same, i also greased the sliders when i changed the pads out.. does anyone know what will cause only the inside pad to wear?

and next, about the grinding noise, i think it may be my e-brake, but its hard to tell because something seems wrong with it, while i was driving i pulled the e brake slowly, and i felt almost no resistance then it would make a pretty loud clunking noise and after it did that i put it back down.. anyone know what that could be? im thinking its adjusted wrong and the shoe is moving causing the clunking noise.. any thoughts?

    thanks

    Re: brake/e brake question

Have you tired bleeding the brake on that side maybe theres air trapped or are there any leaks? Check fluid and make sure it is clean and the master cyl. looks good. Only things I could think of sorry, I was goiing to say grease the pin/ sliders but you said you got that done.

air in the lines? pressure is equal at all places in a hydrolic system.
make sure you have all your springs in the right locations.

it was on both sides, but on only one side of the caliper.. but i took my brakes apart today and the pads seemed to wear normally, so i guess whatever i did before fixed it, so that is good now

        springs?

do you mean in the e-brake system? I didnt see any springs around there, although they were pretty tight, i sprayed a bunch of wd 40 and got them loosened up, but when i went for a drive the noise is still there

so basically, it could still be the brakes, even though i doubt it since i would think the noise would change that i took them all apart, i hope its not the pinion or pitted axles

it does make the noise a bit worse when i go around bends, but i figured it may still be the brakes since the tire is spinning faster/slower

it seems to be worse when i make left bends compared with right bends, and the noise also sounds like its coming from the passenger side

you have rear disk brakes and the pads are wearing uneven? slide pins are the only option dirty, stuck, bent they should be cleaned and regreased at every brake job. I use wheel bearing grease

On every car I've ever had, one pad seems to wear much faster than the other. The good pad may not look totally brand new, but it always had way more material left on it than the worn pad. IIRC, the worn one is always the one with the piston pushing on it. It must wear quicker because it's getting direct force from the piston. I know when I recently changed the back brakes on my Bird, the inner pads were gone, almost to the metal, and the outer pads still had a little life left in them. If the brakes are otherwise working normally, don't worry about it. I think it's "normal".
