  • Rear Brake Job Time..!!!

    1993 Firebird 3.4L

I have been getting some grabbing and "clunking" from my rear drum brakes lately and was not sure what it was. It was coming from the right rear wheel. Yesterday I pulled the right rear wheel and brake drum and found the issue. The right rear wheel cylinder has begun to leak a tiny bit and has wet everything with brake fluid. The shoes have plenty of material left on them but they are now wet with brake fluid. As a test I cleaned everything with brake cleaner and put it back together. When I test drove it they were not grabbing any more.

So today I ordered new wheel cylinders, shoes, speed bleeders, and a spring kit. Grand total $68 from Rock Auto.

I should be able to get to it sometime next week.

Does anybody know what size the brake line fitting is? I forgot to check and I want to make sure that I have the right size line wrench.

    Thanks...

Well, the brakes are done. Rear brakes are such a pain in the a$$. Considering I had 156,000 on the original rear brakes I decided to change everything. The wheel cyliners were leaking pretty badly so everything was a mess.

I changed the wheel cylinders, shoes, drums, and all of the springs.

Looks alot better , should upgrade to discs if you get a chance , one of the best mods I did to my 96' with drums. I just did mine with R1 concepts drilled slotted and ceramic pads and looks alot better , but too cold to paint the calipers which sucked.

how much did that cost you nascar??

I bought a whole rear end with disk brakes/posi/3.42 gears for 200$ and i bet you the install time took less than it did for you to keep those crummy drum brakes on there lol

with that being said you did clean them up nicely and you should see a nice improvement in braking now after your routine maintenence is completed.

I wouldn't call them crummy since you can get the ALM. drums that weigh alot less but discs look alot better.

You would have to find them used, there was a post on them on ftv6.
