  • just did a brake job, now have brake noise

I just replaced all pads (front and rear). I had all 4 rotors machined. I cleaned and lubed all caliper sliders. I am hearing a noise from the front drivers side. It is the pad against the rotor making a scraping noise that gets louder the harder you mash the brakes. The noise is there when going straight or turning left but it tends to go away when turning to the right.

I took it to my local shop today and they checked it out and said everything looked good. They said to drive it for a couple of days and if the noise doesn't stop, to have the rotor machined again and if that doesn't do it, to replace the pads again.

The rotors are kvr rotor blanks and the pads are wagner.

    Any advice?
    Thanks!

Drive it for a little longer. If nothing happens, go back, take it apart and redo it. Or just tighten all the bolts again, make sure slider pin is good. Sounds like you might have to tinker around with it a little

On the spindle did you grind off the sides the caliper sits on and grease those spots, just did my brake all 4 with rotors and ceramic pads. I had the mechanic do mt front and he had his sander out and sanded off the build up on the spindle and greased where the calipiers sit, he said alot of people don't do this but it helps to reduce noise. I never knew about it, he said most mechaincs don't do this. But my car stops like a cat on carpet.LOL

Are you saying to clean and grease where the caliper mounts to the spindle? I cleaned the caliper side with a wire wheel but I didn't clean the spindle side and I didn't put grease between them.

Yes, the parts on the spindle where the calipier sits, its 2-3 spots he sanded down and greased, and of course greasing the caliper pins.

switch the pads on the front (put the driver's side pads on the passenger side and vice versa) - that way you'll know if it's a bad rotor or bad pads.

Hey I like the way you think.

Because it would suck to have a bearing going out, try what checkbit said quickly!

Re: just did a brake job, now have brake noise

Well I was finally able to get my car out and drive it thanks to the snow. I was gonna swap sides with the front pads. However, I noticed when the brakes are cold, it doesn't make the noise or atleast I don't hear it. I got the brakes pretty hot today and I noticed the noise also comming from passengers side front. could it be the semi metallic pads? Should I swap them for ceramic pads?

I took my rotors back off and had them turned again. The guy said they were in good shape though, he basically just cleaned them up. I also cleaned and greased the spindle and caliper like you said. The noise is still there. I doesn't make the noise when the brakes are cold but when they warm up it starts.

I talked to a friend of mine at advance auto parts. He said not to put anything on the back of the pads. However, i had put synthetic caliper grease on them already. Could that be causing the noise? Anyway I took the pads back off and am on my way to swap them out for another set. Hopefully that will fix it! Any ideas?

I was going to do this, but then the other side started making the noise too so I figured I wouldn't bother. Anyway I had rotors turned again but noise is still there. gonna swap out the pads.

Re: just did a brake job, now have brake noise

If you switch the pads from the left to the right, the outboard pads would be in the wrong position. The feeler on the pads should be on the trailing edge of rotation, swapping would negate this.
How long has it been since the brake hoses were replaced? If one were crimped at all, the pressure of the fluid would not allow the caliper piston(s) to retract fully. Some people let their calipers hang by the hose while they swap pads (which we all know is a really bad thing). The weight of the caliper can create a crimp on the hose around the fittings to steel lines. This would also make the noise go away when you turn because th hoses are moving and it may open up a crimp.

Re: just did a brake job, now have brake noise

I ended up getting new pads and so far so good! I didn't realize it mattered as to if the feeler was on trail edge or lead edge. The pad with the feeler does go on the inside, correct? I bought the car new and have never changed the brake lines. As a matter of fact, I have never even bled or changed brake fluid in it either. I can push all of the caliper pistons by hand so they're not seized. Only thing I did different to the new pads I got, was not putting any caliper lube on the backs of the pads. The guy at the auto parts store said wagner doesn't recommend putting anything on their thermoquiet pads. They are ready to go out of the box.

Pad with feeler is outboard pad.
