  • Finally got my C6 wheels installed

So I finally ordered tires for the wheels that I've had for a while. For the front I got 245/40/18 and they fit perfect without any issues. In the rear I got 285/35/19 but I'm having issues. The tire shop that installed them put them on with 1/4" spacers and got them to fit by shaving down a piece where the tires were hitting. I drove the car home about two miles aways and I could hear rubbing on whenever I'm a right or left turn. Should I put on bigger spacers? If so where can I buy them because the shop that installed my tires didn't have anything bigger than 1/4".

I also noticed that my rear shocks were leaking when the wheels were off. Would this affect my tires rubbing at all? Right now I don't want to drive the car at all until I can get this issued resolved, I don't want the tires to wear out quicker than they should. So any help will be appreciated. thanks

Re: Finally got my C6 wheels installed

I don't know of any C6 wheels manufactured that require spacers to fit. Are these OEM, or what? How wide are the wheels? My Z06s are on in the back without any modification or problems 275/35/18.

Come to think of it, those tires are too big, and that could very well cause your problems. You need a 285/30/19 tire. That will keep you very close to stock overall diameter. Going to a 275/35/19 tire would not make much difference, it is still too big. Your front tires are the correct size, but your rear tires are too big, meaning your front and rear tires are running at different rates, and your speedo will be off roughly 5%, and you may run into problems such as your ABS/Traction not working.

        An adj. PHB might help.

Also can you tell where they are rubbing? A little BFHing might solve it.

Yes they are oem 2005 c6 wheels. My car doesn't have traction control and I did correct my tire height with hp tuners.
Doesn't the speedometer only come from rear wheels only? So far I can't tell exactly where they are rubbing. But the shop that put them on did have to hammer out part of the drivers side wheel well on the bottom towards the d/s door.

HPT doesn't allow you to change anything in the ABS module so you may still get low traction lights when your stopping.

^^ Yep. ABS obviously works off of all four wheels, and if your front wheels are going faster than your rears, at some speed, your ABS INOP light will probably come on. Also when stopping, your ABS will likely kick in prematurely.

Well right now I don't have any issues with the abs but with the wheels rubbing. So what do you guys recommend so I can get that issue resolved?

I wouldn't think you would need the wheel spacers. If your fenders are rolled and you're still rubbing, then I think you should remove the spacers and possibly do some minor modifications to the inside of the wheel well such as removing or modifying the bump stops. Some people have fit 315 wide tires with little to no modification, so it's certainly possible.

Do you have drum brakes in the rear by any chance? When I put c6 wheels on my car I had to grind out the inside of the wheel to fit over the hub. Maybe the shop decided to use spacers instead of grinding the wheels.
Oh and I have staggered wheel sizes too without any ABS issues.

Re: Finally got my C6 wheels installed

^^ Good point. And actually, it's not just a drum brake thing, it's all pre 97 or 00 cars I think. The hubs got slightly smaller at some point and the earlier cars require minimal modification to the wheels to fit. The OP didn't mention the year, but this may be the problem.

I had already installed my LS1 spindle/brake/hub assembly from an '02 when I got different wheels, and the front required no modification (though I'm not sure the front ever did) but I had to use a sanding bit on a Dremel for about 30 seconds per wheel just going around and making the the hub on the wheel just a tad bigger and the hub on the car just a tad smaller. Completely forgot about that.

Ok I think I fixed my problem by replacing my rear shocks. Although the left rear still rubs slightly when going up my driveway due to the rear being a bit off to the right. I'm thinking an adjustable panhard bar will be able to completely fix it.
