  • Energy Suspension Bump Stops

My new Energy Suspension bump stops arrived on Saturday. I had time to install them today. The part # was 9-9137.

They can be installed on our cars, but NOT right out of the box. You have two choices when installing these on an F-body car.

    1. Mill the holes wider. This solution might cause them to move over time.

    2. Shave off a little bit of the Poly on 1 side and bend a small tab on the cars frame a tiny bit.

I used method #2 and they are now installed. I drove around for quite a while, over bumps, in and out of driveways, and so far the bump stops have not hit once. That is a good thing. I guess my suspension is still in pretty good shape.

Total install took 1.5 hours. I had to remove both rear tires to access the bump stops, so that took some time. Also, when I bent the tabs, some of the undercoat came off, so I resprayed the area with fresh undercoating.

Now I will keep an eye on them to see how long they last. The OEM ones had rotted away to nothing.

Nice, I still have my SLP ALM. bump stops I haven't installed yet , been sitting for 2 years. My stock ones fell off awhile ago , although my suspension is good so I really don't worry about them hitting the alm will look pretty good. I know thy are recommend for upgrading to 17" wheels from 16". Poly seems like it would be a great choice and not damage anything if it really bottomed out, I will have to look those up.

I don't know I bought them 2 years ago , they came with new bolts and everything, I thought in the instructions they just bolt on by themselves. I could be very wrong though becuase I can't remember. I will have to look on SLP to see. But if you know for sure let me know so I can buy some poly ones, they should last a lifetime. Thanks for pointing that out Letzride.

I am 99.9% sure they are just a spacer...you are talking about these ones right? http://www.slponline.com/view_product.asp?P=80046

These aircraft quality aluminum jounce bumper spacers are necessary whenever installing 17" wheels and tires on any 1993-2002 Camaro or Firebird. They are designed to raise the jounce bumper to prevent tire contact with the inner wheel well.

The item in the SLP link are just spacers. They work with the OEM bump stops. Looking at the shape of them they will not work with the Energy Suspension ones.

I bought the ES bump stops directly from thier website. See link below.

Seems like a very high quality product, just keep in mind what I said earlier, they do not just bolt right up.

                Re: Energy Suspension Bump Stops

Here are some pics of them installed. After I installed them I sprayed undercoating around the area so you might see some overspray on the new bump stops.

                  Re: Energy Suspension Bump Stops

The SLP are spacers, which actually shorten the vertical travel of the rear end so you don't hit your 17" tires on the rear wheel well. I have then on my Bird. Also, since the bump stop is not part of the working suspension, I see no point in installing ES poly ones - the OEM are fine.

                    Re: Energy Suspension Bump Stops

Yeah, OEM are fine, but I think most people replace them because the OEM ones rot away through the years (at least one of mine fell off and I found it on the garage floor). The hope is that the poly will last longer. That and as far as I know, they don't make an OEM style, or any direct bolt-on bump stop for that matter..

                      Re: Energy Suspension Bump Stops

And... mosy importantly, the ES ones are MUCH cheaper then the OEM bump stops from GM. I paid something like $22 for the pair including shipping.

And since they are poly they should not rot away as quickly.

I have been driving with them for a few days now and they do not have a mark on them. Looks like my suspension does not bottom out much. :)
