I see that 275 40 17 is a popular size for all 4 tires on F-bodies. Also see some references to the 285 40 17 is used too.
Can the 285 40 17 be used on front without rubbing? Would be using zr1 style wheel.
I prefer the 285 over the 275 becasue it is closer to the 26" wheel diameter so the speedo is nearly correct.
275 and 285 are both tire/tread width numbers. The 40 is sidewall height and of course the 17 is rim size. Running a 285 over a 275 is only going to change the width of your contact patch.

No, the sidewall height of the 285-40-17's are going to be slightly higher than the 275-40-17's. Unless you mean running all 4 tires with 285's. But it'll then throw the speedo off by 1.2%
The 275's are 25.66" in height, and the 285's are 25.98" in height.
285's will fit the rear wheelwells just fine, but I'm not so sure about the front's. You may get rubbing when turning or hitting any type of bump. I'm not exactly sure though. It probably depends mostly on your rim's offsets.

Sidewall numbers have a meaning. I change them quite often on my GTO. I just have to get the speedometer re-programmed to accept the changes...so that when the speedo reads 60mph, I'm actually doing 60.
275-40-17 means that the sidewall height is 40% the width of the tire.
If you go to 285-40-17, the sidewall height percentage will increase beause the width is different.
It IS confusing, but I had to learn the hard-way when I mixed tire heights once and threw an ABS code. The front tires were a bit smaller and spining faster than the rear tires. The anti-lock system thought that one set was slipping and threw the code on the dashboard. According to the antilock system, all 4 tires/rims need to be spinning at the same exact rate to be working properly.
You can have different size tire widths on your car, but you'll need to find a set that closely matches the tire's height.
On my GTO, I'm running 245-40-18's up front and 275-35-18's on the rear. That's a very small difference, but the ABS hasn't recognized it yet. I'm upgrading the rears to 275-40-18's in a month or so. The tread pattern on the rear tires seem to be low and I don't know why ;)
The stock tire is 235 55 16, which is 26.17 inch diameter, and that tire will make the speedo work properly. Switching to a 275 40 17 drops the diameter to 25.66 inches, with a speedo error of about 2 mph too fast at 60 mph. The 285 40 17 has a diameter of 25.97 inches, which means the speedo will read 60.4 mph when its really doing 60. So the 285 is actually a better tire as far as accuracy goes.
So, I'm thinking of using the 285's all around, rather than 275's. Plus the higher side wall of the 285's will help fill the wheel well better than the shorter 275.

Actually, its the 275's that throw off the speedo. The 285's are the correct height for an accurate speedo. Basing that on the 235 55 16 factory tire being the proper size for correct speedo.
Unless lowered alot 285/40/17 will fit fine. I lost my bid on some Toyo's 285/40/17 tires all the way around. Whitdog, they are just width of the tires, when you include the Aspect ratio thats where you get your overall diameter of the tire. Like a 275/50/17 is almost 28"s and a 275/45/17 is about 27"s and the 275/40/17 is about 26"s.

You haven't been reading. 245, 275, and 315 means nothing as far as overall diameter by themselves.
You're correct, 285/40/17 is closer in overall diameter than 275/40/17 to stock size tires. If you have HP Tuners, you can change the speedo reading for whatever you want, but if you don't, then you will be closer to accurate with 285/40/17. However, given the price difference, being 1 or so mph off at 60mph might not be a big deal. But the question was not which is better, it's will it fit, and I can surely tell you it will fit on the back, and can safely say that if it does rub on the front, it won't rub very badly. I am using 275/40/17 in the front (tuned for them) and have clearance under all circumstances, so if they do rub, it will likely only be when your wheel is turned all the way. But like I said, i can't speak from experience.

Wheel offset has a lot to do with fitment. I was thinking of using the ZR1 wheel.
Still trying to find oil leak on my Camaro, it’s a tough one. I think it is the oil pressure sender myself. Leaking when raving and going into boost....
