  • Poor Handling During Breaking.

As the title says, my car handles like poo while under hard breaking. The direction it pulls is random. Sometimes right, sometimes left. My tie-rod ends are good. I also have no play in my steering. Now, the other day while I had my car in the air changing the oil, I noticed that my wheels were next to impossible to turn by hand, and would not spin freely. This was both front wheels I am assuming this is the root of my problem, but as for what to do, I dont know how to fix this. Thanks in advance for any helpful advice given.

by the way, it is a 96 Firebird.

When was the last time you had the car aligned?

Also, it sounds like your calipers may be sticking. Though it seems a little strange that both would be sticking unless there was an improper installation of the brakes or something. Have you tried clamping your caliper pistons back to "reset" the calipers? Was it just one (or a few) part(s) of the tires rotation that was hard to turn, or evenly difficult throughout the rotation? Does the car pulse under braking or just pull?

      Re: Poor Handling During Breaking.

I am not sure the last time it was aligned. I just got the car. I haven't had it but about a month, but it will drive a straight line on level pavement. I didn't know that I could "reset" the calipers, but I will certainly give that a try on the next good day. I rotated the front left tire first, and noticed that it was incredibly stiff, and just to make sure it was not a warped rotor, I kept rotating it, and the force required to get it to spin after my hand left the rim was rediculus. So, I went to the other side of the car and that wheel had the same problem. It was very stiff and did not want to rotate freely. I assumed it was either a problem with the caliper or something in the power breaking system. I have not had the rear end in the air to see if they too are stiff.
The Car pretty much pulls while breaking. Almost like the front end is getting stuck in a rut. I have to pull on the steering wheel ( in the opposite direction the car pulls), just to keep it a straight line.

I do not know if this has any relevance, but, at low speeds on my driveway (which is gravel) the car acts the the tie rod ends are 50 years old, it pulls and floats, but as soon as I hit the pavement, it will drive a straight line.

        Re: Poor Handling During Breaking.

I am not sure when the car was last aligned, I just got the car not too long ago. I figured it was the calipers or something else in the breaking system. I will try to "reset" them on the next warm dry day we have here. It was a few parts in the tire rotation. The drivers side front wheel, it was all the way through the rotation, and although I didnt make a full rotation with the passenger side wheel, it was stiff and gave no signs of letting up. The car pretty much pulls during breaking. It really only affects the car at high speeds, such as if I had to go from 65 to 30 after meeting someone around a blind curve.

Might it be something with my suspension ( not the stiff breaks)? Because although it has no play in the steering and will drive a straight line, on poorly surfaced roads the car seems to follow every uneven spot in the road.

X2 on checking the calipers & allighnment also I would suggest the lower/upper ball joints.

check to make sure the back brake light switch above the pedal didnt get pushed down and is pushing on the pedal a tiny bit, i had that happen to me before, and my front brakes got stuck on while driving

              caliper pistons are probably S***.

Definitely calipers, maybe turn your rotors while you got the brakes apart. I had a similar problem with my passenger side caliper. One of the pistons was actually frozen, while the other was still working fine. I don't think 96's have dual piston calipers though...

No, 96 is a single piston setup. Probably time for a rebuild, or even better, an excuse to upgrade to LS1 brakes :naughty:

Def agree with that! Dont turn the rotors, it never comes up being that reliable
