  • ABS Issues??

When I hit the brakes hard several times, I get a LowTrac light. If I keep it up, the ABS INOP light comes on and then the red BRAKES light......shutting engine off and restarting clears all the lights until next time I brake hard. What gives??

Is the ABS working properly otherwise?

      Re: ABS Issues??

thats really weird, the low traction/abs inop lights work from the wheel speed sensors, i would clean them and try again, they may be a bit dirty, thats the only thing i can think of.

the only other thing i could think of is your tire(s) are locking up and the speed sensor detects that something is wrong

        Re: ABS Issues??

Check your brake fluid, connections and all the small stuff to check like suggested, I had a speed sensor line that wasn't secure on the Pass. side and it would set off the light with and good launch or braking, just to where the line moved enough to throw the code. Zip tie fixed it, but later on I replaced both front hubs with speed sensors, since it had over 150,000 miles on it.

          Re: ABS Issues??

Thanks for the ideas......abs works ok till the indicator lights come on, then it becomes inop and perpetuates itself by letting the brakes lock up a tire. Works fine again after engine restart till my severe braking manouvers (I run the car on track with Carbotech XP12 front brake pads and stock rears pads as Carbotechs in back were locking those up causing axle hop). I put my Actron reader on it this am and get zero codes, current or pending. Gonna see if a TECHII reader at dealership uncovers anything??

If you change the size of your wheel/tires I am pretty sure this is what ****s it.

              Re: ABS Issues??

If the tire size is off more than 3% it will set off the ABS light, I had the same problem once, it was my passenger speed sensor, the wire was loose and flopping around. A couple of zip ties and no more problems, check both sides driver and passenger side. Make sure their in their plastic clamp, you could also throw a couple of zip ties on them too, just to rule them out. Good luck.

Good stuff.....thanks!! The Tech II showed a historic code which we cleared and we'll see in a week or so on track.

                    Re: ABS Issues??

a red Brake light only comes on when there is a problem with the pressures in the master cylinder has nothing to do wit the abs sounds to me like you have a prob wit your master cylinder. the uneven pressure is messing up the abs which then works it way back to the source

                      Re: ABS Issues??

Any weird issues with ABS, remove and clean the ground connection in the passenger side of the engine bay, behind the battery positive power block. I had weird problems including the one you described, and this solved it. Looked fine on top, but the threads were solid rust.

Isn't that on the driver's side just aft of the abs control unit on the wheel well/shock tower?? I can clean 'em both, as there is another on passenger side tower/weel behind battery itself.
