    Re: rear brake calipers

I went across the border for some chicken wings and stopped in to Autozone and picked up a set of rear calipers for $39 each. My car is a 96' but the rear end is a 2000'. It's probably not worth the trip from T.O. but you could always mail order I suppose. Locally the best price I could find was $124 each. Go figure. My pads and rotors were almost new, so I didn't replace them. I wonder if I'll have the same issues when the time comes for a new set.

well everything was rusted to sh*t on this car as far as brakes go...it had been sitting forever, and the rear brake lines have been broken...so I wanted to replace everything...I got some new pads and new rotors...so the rotor is brand new already...I also damaged the old pads when taking them out...

Should I sand down the pads a little? (I think this kind of defeats the purpose of changing the pads though...

I posted that suggestion on page 1.

If the caliper is siezed there is no point to sanding the pads,I did that on my LT1 to get them to fit but my caliper was ok.

Good luck rebuilding the old girl, sounds like your going to get a few suprises.

I know you mentioned it...but is it ok to do? just seems like I mine as well of not changed the pads...

I don't think the caliper is seized, but I can say that shaving down a little bit of the pad isn't a big deal. The biggest issue you'll have is you'll have to change the pads more often, but who really cares? Are they that expensive?

The old ones if they are half worn would have a couple thousand heat cycles.

The pad material may be about to come off the backing material.

A new shaved pad does not have any heat cycles or wear and will last longer than the 1/2 worn heat cycled pad.

How do the front rotors come off? someone put on crossdrilled ones before and I can't for the life of me bang these things off...I've beat the **** out of them with a hammer to...Is there something holding the front rotors on? The back ones just slid off no issue...

The stock factory ones use that little ring.

                  Maybe they re-used it?

Other than that is just rust.

I always anti-sieze the inside of the hub of the rotor.

Beat it off with a 10lb sledge.

It's a little ring the factory used to hold the rotor straight on the hub.

If you don't see it it aint there;)

                        Re: rear brake calipers

ok...6lb sledgehammer with me and my dad taking turns wailing on this thing will still not break these rotors loose...Im stumped...someone suggest I heat it up, but I dunno how good that is for the wheel bearings.

I sprayed liquid wrench on it a few days ago, and again today..didnt do anything.

I've been thinking about just taking the whole hub off so I can get more leverage hammering it with the sledge...is it just those 4 rear bolts holding that hub on? is it difficult to remove, or if I take that off, is some seal or some crap like that going to fall apart and need to be replaced etc...?

                          Re: rear brake calipers

Ive heard that on the back of the hub there is 2-3 holes on other cars beside where the wheel studs go in...apparently on other cars there is threads there and you are able to put a bolt in and begin tightening it...this usually seperates the rotor pretty painlessly.

I don't remember seeing threads when I was looking back there...can anyone confirm this though?

                            Re: rear brake calipers

Have you tried hitting them back toward the hub to free them?

Hit it all around the hub and on the edge.

It might be easier just to pound the studs out.

lol, I've hammered both sides, spun the rotor in small increments while delivering 3-5 blows per turn...and I even smashed out the studs...don't think its moved a mm...

Heat may be the only way now.
