  • Rack and Pinion Replacment

I took the car in for an oil change this morning and come to find out that the shop discovered that the rack and pinion was leaking.

They said it was going and will cost $1500+Parts to replace.

I haven't noticed anything on the steering lately. Last night I drove it to Denver and back without an issue.

This really pisses me off because My struts are going, all my tie rods are going again and all of this is adding up to nearly $4500 in total costs and repairs.

I swear this car is costing me as much as an Exotic to own, this is suppose to be the base model which is suppose to be cheaper and yet its telephone numbers on service. Not to mention GM products are not easy to service.

Did you happen to notice how much ps fluid they had to add. It could have been just a small residual leak, or even oil from something else leaking on the rack.

R&P is about $200 for the part and you can get tie end rods for $50, then front shocks you can go with cheap set for $150 or just get some KYB adj. for $315 and do them yourself which all isn't that hard to do. I would do upper A arm bushings and lower($100) while your at it , then just get a alignment so about $900 in parts and a alignment, which isn't bad for a complete front end job, esp. if you have higher miles on it. I know I spent about $2100 for all new moog front bushings, new FE2 R&P and power steering pump , Tub. K , Tub lower A arms , Tub upper A arms, and QA-1 front shocks W/300lb springs and new front shock mounts. This included me doing some labor an paying about $500-700 in discount labor and getting a lifetime alignment warranty through firestone for $130(I think it was). I think I got a good deal shopping around, for what I got. Also included Powerslot front sloted brakes and ceramic pads installed with painted calipiers.

I would just monitor the fluid level and if it's only leaking a small amount then don't sweat it, just top it off now and then. But if the time comes to replace it, I think its location makes it a pretty easy job compared to some other cars out there. Same with shocks and other things like was stated above.

That would be awesome if I could get a Z28 donorcar.

pretty damn easy to service to me. Our cars don't have struts, perhaps thats your problem.

+1 for doing it yourself. shouldn't take more than one night to fix it. or if you don't have the tools or know-how, take it to another shop or call and get quotes. 1500 is ridiculous.

and the more you put off each one the more the $$$ will add up before you just decide to junk the car. I see it a lot with cars, people let one thing go here, then another and before long it is just too much for them to swallow and they need a new car instead of throwing a couple hundred at a time at it and getting more years out of it.

You can do the rack yourself, you can do shocks yourself tie rod ends yourself, etc. lol. Just get it aligned when done

I swapped my rack and pinion in about 2 hours solo.
