  • brake bleeding for 6 hours + WTF

I dunno, maybe Im just an idiot, but on the new car I have finally finished swapping the rotors/calipers/pads. I've been bleeding this thing for 6+ hours and the pedal is still spongy. Red brake light stays on when the car is running.

    Heres background info.

All 4 calipers were replaced, all 4 sets of brake pads, and all 4 rotors. The rear brake lines have been replaced from the abs block back to the "T", and from the "T" to each caliper.

Ive gone through 2 litres of brake fluid now, and as far as I can see there is no leaks.

As per haines manual, I have started with the rear most abs bleeder, then the front abs bleeder, then proceeded to the rear passenger side, rear drivers side, front passenger side, front divers side and repeat about 50 times.

I have someone in the car who I have pump the pedal 5 times and hold it on the 6th time until I say "release" (which is after I have closed the bleeder so that I do not suck air backwards.

I've never in my life had this much trouble bleeding brakes...what's going on?

Also, I took the car around the block and did a couple of hard stops...came back and my entire front end was smoking up...smelled like burning brakes. Is that just the new brakes brakeing in? Never smelled that before either (and I've broken in my brakes on my other car here)

    I'm kinda stumped here guys...

ABS can be a little tricky to bleed. I've never done them myself but maybe this will help you.

Did you spray the front with brake cleaner before you took it around the block, if not it could of been just old fluid and whatnot burning off. Does it brake normal now since the the new brake setup? Might have a sticking calipier, did you grease the pins on the calipiers? I've bleed mine a couple of times , tried using the brake bleeder gun , but ended up having to have some one pump the brakes to get it done right, also have to make sure the fluid stays full after each wheel you do.

my rear calipers were sanded a little uneven, so they are rubbing at the moment...but the rears were not smoking.

I sprayed all the calipers with cleaner very quickly before I took it out because Im sure I probably got brake fluid on them somewhere...

When I went from drum to disc in the rear on mine it rubbed and I had to dremel down some spots and and did need the shims on the back of the baking plates or it would squeel around corners, but I found out I could dremel the caliper to get that to stop also. So I would put some paint on the caliper then let it dry and then take it out for some hard brake stops and some good turns. Then look at the calipiers and see where its rubbing. I know I dremeled the rear calipers alot.

I need to get these properly bled first...I hate having to have my foot to the floor to stop. I dont understand how there can be air left in this thing...it must be stuck in the abs module like 3.4grapeofwrath suggested.

I dont suppose hp tuners can read abs stuff? or act like a tech tool to help me bleed?

Hptuners doesn't do ABS systems, theres a special ABS tech tool for our ABS systems.

so basically I need to go to the mechanics? What do you think I am looking at cost wise for bleeding?

Is your ABS light on? If not its not your ABS system, might be a the brake booster, since the pedal is soft.

so does anyone know how to get the abs to cycle? Ive read mixed things about just needing to turn the key to run for 10 seconds?
