  • Looking for a little help with suspension settings

Alright, I've had the Firebird back together for about a couple of months now, been driving the wheels off of it to get everything broken in so I can get the alignment dialed in. I did, btw, have an alignment done after the work was completed to make sure it was safe to drive.

Anyways, I'm going to have the alignment checked and tweaked to get it spot on, and was hoping for some feedback on settings. I'd like to get the most out of the car that I can while keeping the steering from being too twitchy on the highway, and wearing out the tires in a matter of months (the Z-rated Toyos wear out fast enough as it is).

I did some looking around and read the preferred settings for a car that is used for autocross, and compared them to the factory specs. I'm guessing that the autocross settings would work decently well for a car that is street driven? I beat on the car pretty hard, and have found the limits of it's cornering capabilities more than a few times. It's not a daily driver, although it does get driven very often.

The reason I'm asking is that the steering feels just a little numb on center. To me, the wheel doesn't feel quite as responsive as it should.

Here's a list of what's been done to the car, and what's soon to come. Hopefully someone can help me tune this thing so I can really wring it out. The car is originally a Y87, btw.

    Current mods-
SLP Stage2 Bilstein/Eibach kit (can't remember the spring rates or damping settings, although it lowers the front approximately a half inch or less, while the rear appears to be about a half to one inch lower)
Eibach swaybar kits, front and rear
Energy Suspension urethane bushings all around
SLP Firehawk wheels with Toyo Proxes 4 - 275/40/ZR17's (not positive, but I believe the SLP wheels have the same measurements as 1LE/WS6)
    BMR adjustable phb
    1LE/WS6 driveshaft
Minor weight reduction (rear seats/seat belts, spare tire, jack, some sound deadening)

    Soon to come-
Shock tower bar, most likely a set of subframe connectors, adustable torque arm
More weight reduction (composite hood, sound deadening, possibly some lighter weight chassis components)
    Battery relocation

That's all I can think of right now. Hopefully someone will have some useful input on how to set everything to help me get a little more out of the cars handling.

Sorry that's so long, I just wanted to make sure I covered everything.

so far you're on the right track it looks like. you'll see big responses from the subframe connectors along with your swaybar setup (what thickness are you running btw?). since you have it lowered, i would highly suggest a good set of shocks, some lower control arms (lca's) and relocation brackets to help out with the rear geometry and reduce wheel hop and keep the back planted. i'm running a set of double adjustables with my eibach springs and it turned out very well. along with the rest of my suspension she already handles like the car is on rails and i haven't even put in my 32/19 swaybar set yet.

keep up the good work mang. show us some pics!

What were the main differences in the stock align specs and the auto-x? Im sure there is more negative camber but what about caster? What air pressures are you running?

The sway bars are 35 front/25 rear hollow bars. I already have new shocks, they were part of the SLP Eibach/Bilstein kit. As far as LCA's and relocation brackets, I don't really need them. I have even installed my new urethane torque arm bushing yet, and I have ZERO problems with axle tramp, or traction for that matter. It will spin the rather wide tires from a dead stop, but I have yet to once feel a bit of wheel hop. But, I'm not really looking for quarter mile performance so much as I am cornering performance.

As for the difference between the front alignment settings that I was referring to, they're easy to find. Here's the page I was using for some reference (http://www.angelfire.com/my/fastcar/suspension.html) I'm probably going to go with the autocross/street alignment settings. That should probably give me the feel I'm looking for once the alignment is set.

And I'll post pics as soon as I can get the decal work done and get it cleaned up.
