  • Struts/Shocks are preferred?

I was wondering. Between KYB or Monroe, which is recommended? Car is V6 model, and do want a good shock that will last for awhile. Thanks.

I ran Bilsteins and Eibach springs on my 01 for a number of years and they worked very well. In fact, if handing performance is the goal, you want a fixed-valve shock and aftermarket spring package, the combination of Bilstein shocks and Eibach springs offers excellent performance and is a great value. The springs will lower the car 1 to 1.25 inches which is an added benefit. For more information on this see: http://www.camarohomepage.com/project/part1.htm

Just recently, I've moved on to QA1 double-adjustable shocks with Global West constant rate rear springs and Eibach coils over the QA1s DA's in front. Admittedly, a much more expensive set-up that the Bilstein/Eibach combination I ran before but, considering other suspension mods and my tire/wheel package, I needed an even better shock/spring combination.

Give Sam Strano a call from stranoparts.com. He's very well respected in the F-Body community for suspension and he'll tell you the best setup for what you're looking for. Last time I called him up, he told me that the Bilstein HD had gone through a design change and he was no longer recommending them. He recommended that I pick up the KYG AGXs, or Koni if I was willing to drop the coin. As far as springs, Strano springs are the best if you want linear springs; Hotchkis if you want progressive rate.

KYB Adjustable's would be best over Monroe, and should last quite awhile plus you can adjust the setting you like.

What design change exactly? I was just about to order to my bilstein HD's after reading what others on here had to say about them. Should I get something else instead? (I just want a good replacement for stock shocks at a reasonable price.)

For ride quality improvement due to worn shocks, I still recommend Bilstein HD and stock springs (which I've run) or the SLP Springs/Shocks Combo for ~$660 (which Im about to run).

Between those two I would pick the KYBs; in fact I did pick the KYBs when I wanted an upgrade from stock about 3 years ago. They're not of the same quality as Koni, or even the Bilsteins, but they're decent for the price. It is nice to have some adjustability, and as long as you're running street-level springs they should handle them ok. I've put about 70-80k miles on mine and they still work fine.

EDIT: I assume you're talking about the AGX shocks, right? I just saw another poster mention the GR2s; if those were what you were asking about I know nothing about them.

I had a pair of the Pro-kit springs on my car up until a couple of months ago (in fact, I bought them here), and didn't care for them at all. They were just way too soft for my taste; I would routinely hit the bump stops on harder bumps (with just me in the car) and the handling wasn't anything special. You can make up for some of the softness by stiffening up the shocks, but only to a point before you start running into handling issues. I just installed a pair of the BMR springs (which I already had on the front) and they are 100x better IMO. Nice firm ride, no bottoming out, but not too harsh either.

In fact, if anyone wants to try the Eibach springs I took off let me know, I'll part with them for next to nothing (+ shipping of course :D).

                        Re: Struts/Shocks are preferred?

At the very least, anyone's choice when it comes to shocks on these cars (there are no struts on 4th gens) should be KYB GR2s. These are mild stock replacements and are decent for the price. Monroe and/or Gabriel shocks are auto part store stock and are worse than OEM (unless your deCarbons are blown and you're bouncing along the road). Personally, I would prefer Bilsteins to either of these, or Konis for that fact, but those are both a step or two up in budget.

My Z car came with Monroe Sensa-Traks on it's strut/shock design, and they are the worst shocks I've felt. They feel like they're not even valved properly for the stock 146/188# springs and bounce you around in the car at every bump or uneven spot in the road.

My guess would be KYB ADJ. or Blistiens.
