  • Who's idea was it

to make the front struts a pita to change? finally did mine yesterday after 296,000 miles. The nut was rusted on both shocks and had to break one off and saw the other one off. :( I was 2 hours from finishing and had a call for a showing on the house in 2 hours. Got it done with 20 minutes to spare.

Should have just bought new springs and upper mounts while you were doing it anyway. Would have saved you a LOT of knuckle busting.

I got new upper mounts for it. both were bad, I could run over a doodle bug and they would clunk, haha. I can't really see spending a lot of money on a $1000 car, but I love the car and it fits me good. I guess spending $100 a month is cheaper than a car payment, which I have 13 more on my Kodiak.

I'm the same way having my car with 18 miles on it brand new in Dec. of 95' , I just allow so much to be done at one time , since its paid off and insurance is cheap.

that really does not sound like a design fault. sounds more like a living up north problem. or car from the north.

It's a known problem on these cars. Living up North or in rust-prone areas only compounds it.

GM didn't seem to care about the fact that the depressed area in the shock mount would trap water and cause everything within to rust. I'd suggest some waterproof heavy duty grease to help prevent problems with the new parts in the future.

Even in AZ , I had rust on the passenger side after 80,000 miles , it just the car, do the best with it and deal with the rest.

I have seen the same issue on newer cars with a better design. I think Its just inherent because its in a valley and not using galvanized or stainless parts just made it worse.
