• Time to Spend Money...

It's time to spend some money on the beast. First step, new wheels and tires. Is there anyone out there actually running 275/40-17's on a 4th gen convertible? I have seen all sorts of "I know someone who is...", but before I plunk down the cash, I want to make sure I won't have any clearance problems. My plan is to use 17x9.5 wheels with a 53mm offset and a 7.3 to 7.4 backspacing (depending on wheel style).

    Thanks!

... why do you want tires that wide? for the extra money you can simply buy better (more grippy) tires..

275/40-17's are the factory stock size for the WS6 and SS models.

Anything +48mm or more will work on a 17x9.5 wheel, so on a 17x9 wheel the +53 will fit perfectly. P275/40R17 won't rub, its well within the limits of the wheel wells

          You'll be fine.

As long as you're spending money :D ...

Subframe connectors make a huge difference on a convertible. Otherwise stickier tires will make the car flex even more than it does now.

Good point, I didn't notice you had a convertible. Definetly opt for subframe connectors.

Thanks for all the responses! Subframe connectors (and a strut tower brace) are also on the list of "things to do". Of course, this list grows daily. I may need a second job just to pay for the mods.

I have 275/40/18's on my rear, no rub problems. If 18's in that size fit, 17's should be no problem.

Make fun of me if you will, but why do subframe connectors make a big difference on our verts?

That's just a good question, no reason for worry.

The roof of a car adds an amazing amount of strength to the chassis. It's not that much metal, but it's in a critical place. Cut the roof off, or even put a hole in it with t-tops, and the chassis is weaker, and the car flexes too much, especially over bumps and around corners. Feels bad and doesn't let the tires work properly. Not good for a sports car. It's why GM only sells the Z06 Corvette as a hardtop.

GM adds some bracing to the floorpan of convertibles, but not enough. Based on the chassis flex I got during a test drive I wouldn't have bought the car if I hadn't known I could stiffen the chassis with sfcs.

I think the convertables allready have "sub frames" or some form of extra renfrocement..

make sure that when, if you do, get a set that they will work on convertable f-bodys
