  • Brake Problems. Need Help!

Hey guys so I bought my '97 RS with an "ABS Inop" light on. The owner said it had been on for awhile and she never noticed any problems and her ship couldn't figure out what was wrong. So I never paid any attention to it until the brakes started locking up on me.
It only happens after I have left my car outside on cold, rainy days. When I have to slow down from already slow speeds(like in a parking lot) the brake pedal is extremely stiff and the brakes lock up. This happens even if I barely touch the brake pedal. But when I reach about 20 mph and then brake there are no problems. The ABS light stays on all the time. Do you guys have any ideas? Thanks in advance!

There should be a trouble code you can pull with a scanner.

When you say the brakes "lock up", are the brakes actually locking the wheels, or is the ABS kicking in? I have pretty much the same problem, my ABS Inop light comes on frequently, and as you mention usually when it has been raining (but not always), but I've never had the brakes actually lock up. It will activate the ABS sometimes, usually a low speeds, but it's more just an annoyance than a danger. I figure it has to be either a wheel speed sensor, or a short in the wiring somewhere; I haven't had a chance (or the inclination really) to try and fix it yet. Truth be known, I would just as soon disable the entire ABS system permanently, but I haven't looked into how to do that yet either.

Oh, and I've also had the stiff pedal from time to time - as I understand it the ABS system will go into "Ice Mode" sometimes when I thinks you're on ice, and the stiffer pedal is a way to help keep you from over-braking??? Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Ok I think my brother has a scanner I'll try to meet up with him this weekend and see what code we can pull.
EarlR the ABS does not kick in, the wheels lock up completely until I let off the brake. Then once I get up to about 20mph and brake from there, the pedal is normal and it doesn't lock up.

Like said could be a wheel sensor or a loose wire to the speed sensor , mine did that on the passenger side used a zip tie and fixed the problem.

If the ABS is inop, the wheels will lock during hard braking because there's no ABS.

As for scanning for codes, you'll need a scan tester which supports the ABS module. Most consumer testers do not but a few do.

About all you can do without a tester is check all ABS wiring and connections.

Well I took apart both the driver and passenger side last night and it all appeared to be ok. There was nothing that looked bad or anything. So I guess I will have to wait and see what the codes say.

Could be a bad ground too for the ABS mudule, I remember when i wires up my HIDs, I forgot to put a ground back in and my ABS inop light was on. Driverside, next to the headlight, and the hood support
