  • Rear Suspension Refresh

Just figured i'd share in case anyone is looking for opinions on parts.

Just finished freshening up the rear suspension in my 1993 Firebird.
172,000 miles and rear suspension was all original.

    Installed the following new parts:
    Moog variable rate coil springs
    KYB Gas-A Just Shocks
    Moog Sway Bar End Links

Took it for a test drive and could not believe the drastic difference. The car handles really great Well worth the money and a few hours of my labor.

No more bottoming out over dips, no leaning in corners, just rides awesome.

While I was under there I took a wire brush to the rear axle and diff cover, cleaned it all up and shot it with a nice coat of VHT Epoxy Coat black paint. Looks great.

For anyone interested, all parts were ordered from RockAuto.com, and were not expensive at all.

If anyone has any questions regarding the installation, fire away...

Not at the moment, they actually still look ok.

What do you think helped the most on the upgrade?
got a whole list of stuff to be done to mine, just no time and I need a car that isn't in the shop.

In my case, the springs for sure. The rear end was sagging and starting to hit the bump stops way too often.

Hitting bump stops would be shocks, uneven rear / lower tail height would be springs.

enzia, you'll notice new shocks the most if yours are worn. Super easy install too, 30 mins for the pair is reasonable.

Well I got new springs, shocks done a year ago or so. Just a lot of bushings to replace now.

Nice man. Even if your stock LCA bushings look ok it would probally make a difference replacing them with poly ones. I know I noticed the difference when I replaced my stock rubber ones. You can even buy a heavier duty LCA from JEGS for $100. Then you'll def notice a difference.

Yah, with 172k miles, I'm sure the lca bushings are shot. Give it a go. Get the Moog from rockauto, not poly though ;).

Not necessarily. I changed the shocks 1 week before the springs. Got better, but still hit the bump stops over big dips with people in the back seats.

                    The springs did the trick.
