  • Doing Drum to Disc Swap - couple questions?

    Hey folks,

I have a 97 firebird, and got myself a 97 Trans am Rear end with TCS. If it didn't have TCS I would've gone for a full rear end swap, but unfortunately that is not the case.

In any event, I am doing a drum to disc swap, have taken the Caliper assembly off the rear end, and will be taking the caliper mounting brackets off soon. I am missing the following:

The GM Shims (Which I plan to get if I need them)
    Rear E-Brake Cables

The Rear E-Brake Cables didnt' come with this rear end, however on the ls1tech forums I have seen some people selling some from 2000 ls1 f-bodies. My question is, are they all the same? If not, do I specifically need 93-97 ones? Or does it get more complicated than that?

Better yet, does somebody have a set that would work for me that I can buy :)

    Thanks folks!

Wouldn't it be easier to swap the whole axle?

His car doesn't have traction control and the donor rear does. The anti-lock brake system isn't compatible between the two. (single sensor in the differential for non traction and sensors in both axles for traction control)

As far as the job goes there are probably a similar amount of bolts with swapping the brakes but you don't have to get under the car to disconnect the drive shaft, torque arm, brake lines and e-brake cables.
96 White M5 Camaro. Manual everything. Magnaflow cat, dynomax dual outlet axle back. Swapped to a disc rear with 3.42s and a torsen differential, kyb gr2 rear shocks, moog rear endlinks.

I did rear discs awhile back, pretty straight forward, still have to run brake lines. make sure you pick up shims.

            Thanks for the responses guys.

I got the calipers and mounting backplates off of the donor rear end, that was a fun job, haha. When I am closer to actually installing it all in the car, I will go pick up some shims, just in case I need them. I still need to get a set of E-brake cables from a 97 Trans Am.

I am also now left with a 2.73 Posi-Rear end that I haven't been able to sell off as of yet up here in Ontario, Canada, although I am going to keep trying!
