  • hanging up after new pads

I put new pads on today and the brakes are hanging up pretty good now. I have the new brakes from a 99 plus. I had to have done somethimg wrong but can't figure out what. Any ideas

It wouldn't be that there is too much fluid right? The fluid level in the resivor seems to be normal

By hanging up do you mean you can't get them over the rotor or that the brakes are being applied before you hit the pedal? If the former did you compress the piston and if the latter are you putting the 99 brakes on a 93-97 vehicle? Also are these front or back brakes?
96 White M5 Camaro. Manual everything. Magnaflow cat, dynomax dual outlet axle back. Swapped to a disc rear with 3.42s and a torsen differential, kyb gr2 rear shocks, moog rear endlinks.

The bakes are being applied before I hit the pedal. I put the 98 plus brakes on my 94 about 60,000 miles ago and I am now replacing the front pads with wagner thermoquiet ceramic pads.after driving around my parking lot both sides brakes are very hot and I have never even hit the brakes yet. Does the master cylinder pull the pistons in the calipers off the rotor or is it spring loaded or something?

I have been doing some more research and realized that I never removed the pins and greased them. One pin on each side removed with ease, however the other pin on each side was very hard to remove and I was only able to get one of them out with a lot of effort and some vice grips. I attached a pic of the top and bottom pin from the drivers side. Do you think this could be the cause of my brakes hanging up? If I can get the other pin out would it be ok to just buy new pins or do you think that the inside of the (im going to call it a carrier/bracket) where the pin fits into is also rusted and messed up?

I replace those pins (and grease) when I do pads. The caliper must be able to slide on those pins (Bracket Guide Pins). And the other part where the pads fit is called the Pad Bracket.

Well i am going to try and get the other one out tonight after work and see if new greased pins fixes the problem.

I had a similar problem on my 2000 pads and rotors from brakemotive. From what I read at the time, the aftermarket rotors were a little thicker and the pads had shims on the back. I had to remove the shims, but now they work like they should. Also the hardware kit on mine would rub a little on the rotor when I went over bumps, I had to file that down a little to get that to stop.

Ill make sure the hardware kit doesnt rub. I did measure the pads I bought against three other kinds of pads at advance and carquest and they were all the same thickness.

Keep in mind that when you grease the caliper mounting pins you can't use "ordinary" grease...like what you'd use in your ball joints.

You have to use pure silicone grease. Also, you need to clean out the old grease and I use gun cleaning brushes for that.

Clean the pin bores. Then clean the old pins. If they are rusted, I'd get new ones rather than trying to clean the rust off, but either way, after you've cleaned everything up, slop some pure silicone grease on the pins and reassemble the system.

Thanks for the tip. I am not even chancing the old pins and have already ordered new ones. I will make sure to clean the bores out first. The gun brush is a good idea.

Bore brush also works well to clean the IAC valve opening in the UIM on 93-98 engines. Good thing to do as part of a PM program.
