  • What are good shocks and springs??

    Hey All,
My maro needs new shocks and springs badly, they are still stock and have been driven for about 85,000 miles now, and I feel it is time to update. So my question; what is a good brand of shocks & springs to get/ask for. I want something that will ride good, but also conrer very very well, when I need them to, cause I am planning on doing some autoX next summer, and as far as the springs, I dont need to be lowered on account of the body kit, just a good combo of shocks & springs. Thanx

    -Josh

You're planning on doing AutoX - just for fun or professionally?

Shocks and springs - how much are you willing to spend? What other modifications have you made to the suspension? Do you want it to ride lower?

Me personally? For autoX I like using a good set of stock late model Fbody springs in combination with bilstein shocks for a cheap easy upgrade and fix for the fbody suspension. It handles 80% better, rides great, and lasts a long time.

Other options include those listed in my suspension guidelines (sticky in the forum) such as Eibach prokit springs and revalved bilsteins or Koni shocks, or another spring with Koni shocks.

The biggest question is - what is your budget?

    Cheapest option:
    V8 Springs - $50-100
    Bilstein shocks - $300
    Install - $200
    Total - $600

It climbs sharply from there... $500 for revalves, $250 for springs, $200 for install - nearly $1000.

Koni shocks cost even more. Coilovers even more. Each upgrade you do will put you in a different AutoX class.

Decide what you REALLY intend to do with the car, then make that call. For me, stock springs and bilstein shocks, a good set of sways, LCAs, and a nice panahrd (all 1LE) have me smiling. The only thing I could possibly want more is a little more springrate in the front and a 35mm bar.

coilovers are only extra expensive cause your paying for a spring and shock setup, and its adjustable.

i saw a 35mm suspensiontech go for $96 i was thinking about buying it but decided i didnt have the springs for it. (nor did i want the high spring rate).

its all about goals, my goals are to have a street/road race car that can easily be switched to a drag car in seconds.

Since you have a 97 you have stiffer springs rates then the 98+ v6s. If you want to make a world of difference for cheap just put a 35MM swaybar up front and but a Bilisten HD set in. You may want to put v8 springs in though for the increased spring rate.

All most all the aftermarket springs SUCK they are not made for handling. The 98-02 Prokit works and the G2 spring set isnt bad either.

If you do change your springs then the bilistens will need to be revalved to work to there full power.

If you got the cash for the adjustable koni or coilovers. Either way it will out handle stock.

If your just going to autox then you can build a totaly handling suspension! Thats what im doing.

If your into drag racing the ones you have now are perfect :D

Z28 springs will be a hella stiff. Especially up front.

"I am planning on doing some autoX next summer"

If you want to be competitive in autox you _really_ need to get a rulebook before you start modding. It's easy to do one thing you think is nothing, and wind up in a class with seriously modded cars.

Im most cases if you just touch shocks/ front sway bar your fine. But im sure its different in different areas.
