  • Power Steering Hose Replacement

Replaced my power steering hoses this week, here are a few tips:

    1993 Firebird, 3.4L

Original Hoses, never removed or replaced before.

Have a drain pan handy to catch all of the fluid.

The pressure hose on the back of the pump was easy to remove. Just use a 5/8" line wrench and it will come off without much trouble. The pressure hose on the rack was much to tight to break loose with an 18mm line wrench. Don't waste your time. Just grab a hacksaw, cut the metal line close to the fitting, and use a good quality 18mm deep socket, 6-point. Now you can break it loose with ease.

The return hose is connected to the pump with a spring clip. Piece of cake to remove. The return hose on the rack was much too tight to remove with the 18mm line wrench. Use the same technique as above. Cut the pipe and use an 18mm deep socket, 6-point.

Installation is the reverse of removal.

Top off the fluid, start the car, and turn the wheel lock to lock a few times to remove the air. Check fluid level one last time and you are done.

    Total time = 1.5 hours.
    Total parts cost = < $30
