Ok, here is the issue. I go out to fill up my tires with air because I will be driving from Utah to Michigan on Thursday, going home for christmas. On the front passenger tire, on the sidewall, a chunk of rubber is taken out of the tire. I can see and feel the layer underneath. It's only on the side of the tire, and, according to my roomate because he was the one that did it ((when I asked him)), it has been that way for 2-3 weeks. So, is it safe to drive home, or what should/could/need I do to have a safe and not too expensive trip?
I'm no expert, but if there is a chunk of your tire missing you really should replace the tire. You really don't want to have a blow-out on the highway.
Hell, worse comes to worse I'd drive on the donut rather than a bad tire.
While you could probably drive around like that until all the tread is gone,a sidewall hole can be dangerous. If you do decide to drive on the tire,I'd keep the speed below 60 mph just in case you have a blow-out.

If you have the money, replace the tire! You don't want to be driving on the highway hit a nasty pothole, overflex the tire and cause a bigtime blowout. Then you'll be wondering how your gonna come up with the money to fix bigger problems, if you don't get hurt yourself. I personally wouldn't drive on a tire that has a chunk taken out of the side of it. Why take an unnecessary risk?
UPDATE: I just was able to scrape up the money for the tire. I got that one replaced, $90 total((Which is a lot for a broke college student)), so I am good for the trip. I don't like having mismatched tires, but at least I will be safe for the return home. =)
