  • do i need new brake pads?

    hello,
i just got my rotors turned, i was going to get new ones and put them on but i was on vacation and i needed the car to be done when i got home so i had my brother take the car and have the rotors turned...upson my arrival home i now have brake squeal. think i need new pads? there is just over 16000 miles on the car and pads but i have heard alot of people get squeal after turning the rotors. anyway i can tell if the pads are worn besides taking off everything? im going to replace the pads myself if they are worn i was thinking the ceramic pads either from NAPA or autozone just cause they are close to my house.

    thanks
    eddie

Whenever my brakes squeal I spray them down with brake cleaner that you can buy at any autoparts store. Brakes are sensitive to any change like turning rotors. This should help. It doesn't sound like you need new brakes.

How's your stopping power? That should be more of an indicator than squeal. Your pads shouldn't have gone bad after 16k miles though, and why did you have the rotors turned? Seems a little early for that...

make sure that the squeal is from brake dust, and not the wear indicators telling you that you do in fact need need new pads.

I have heard another mechanic say that you do not need to change pads when you turn rotors if the old pads are good, and the wear is even across them.

I personally would much rather and always suggest new pads when you turn rotors. I have yet to test out turning rotors and reusing old pads (with good life left) so maybe I will and see if they wear the same.

The F-body discs system are some of the best so you may be able to get away with it on our cars where as other cars may not be so forgiving.
