What kind of tires?

I need to get some new tires for my Camaro. What kind of tires should I be looking for? Any specific brand that's better than the others? Also, I heard having wider tires in back would be better, is that true?

Well, I'm certainly not an expert, but I got BF Goodrich Radial T/A P245/50R16's on my Camaro. They are quite a bit thicker than stock size, but they still don't rub up against the wheelwell, and they give kickass grip and feel for the road. :D

The wider the tire the better the handling and cornering. To see tire ratings go to www.tirerack.com They show a bunch of stats such as dry and rain performance. Personally I have had two tires on my car. Both tires are AWESOME, with the exception that they are not all-season tires so you might need winter tires depending on where you live. Here is what I recommend, everyone on this site can back me up on the excellant performance of these tires.

1. Firestone Firestone sz0's- My first tires. Pretty expensive tire, but worth every dollar. These are the BEST tires for our fbodies and their performance is unmatched, even by more expensive tires. They cut through water without a porblem. Another plus they have awesome curb protectors, which have saved my chrome several times. They run great at the track and grip the pavement like no other.

2. Kumho Supra Ecsta 712's- The current tires I have on my firebird. Cost about half the price of the firehawks. Performance is still amazingly high. Total bill for a set of 4 245/50/16 tires cost me 525. These give you the best bang for your buck and are cheaper than most tires. These also have curb protectors, but not as good as the firehawks. Also great for racing, but dont give you the same grip as the firehawks.

Once you have a tire selected make sure you go to a good tire shop to install. I went to JUST TIRES and they did a excellant job, didn't even put a scrath in my chrome rims.

I have 245-50-16 on my 95 3.4. I went with Daytona HR's all the way around cause they were cheap and look halfway decent. Our cars have a speed limiter at around 110mph, so there is no reason to buy a Z rated tire unless you got a few extra hundred you dont know what to do with. I think the best tired ive ever used so far were from Pep Boys. The Ultra Z tire. I have those on my 82 SCCA trans am after a few reccomendations. They are a very high grip/low miledge tire. All 4 wore out at around 10-15k miles, but if its dry traction you want, those will handle anything u can steer around.

i do not recommend comp ta's the grip does not last very long at all. My car spins the tires way to easy. I would go with 295's in back or 275's

By the way, 275 is the biggest you can go ALL THE WAY AROUND. I'm not sure of the full size for a 16 inch rim though. (275/45R16 or 275/55R16) You definately want to be able to rotate them. I see corvette guys whine all the time about not being able to rotate and they wonder why the tires don't last for $hit.
