  • Time for a new power steering pump

So my '98 has finally crapped out it's power steering pump, which given what I've done to the car and how I drive it, isn't surprising. I've been considering just running a replacement pump and adding a cooler. But I'd love to see about using a different pump. I'd love to get one from Turn One, but Idk if they offer one to fit. Does anyone here know if Turn One offers one that could be used on a '98 Y87 A4 car?

What symptoms did you have prior to it pooping out? Mines making a little bit.of whining on hard turns. But I noticed the fluid was a tad low. When I topped it up it is better but not 100%.

To hear some whining while turning and pressing the accelerator is pretty common. Mine started making a very loud whining noise whenever you would try to turn the steering wheel, and then started to loose pressure at idle. Now, to get the power assist, you have to press the accelerator slightly to get the engine above idle, and even then it's difficult to turn.

If yours was low on fluid, you may check for leaks. Leaks can not only cause a loss of fluid, but also a slight loss of pressure. If you have leaks, I'd recommend replacing your lines and changing/bleeding your power steering fluid. If your pump is starting to struggle to get pressure at lower speeds, then it's probably time for a new one. And in that case, I'd definitely recommend replacing the lines as well, just for safety sake.

But back to my question, is the pump on our car interchangeable with one from another vehicle? Is there one that would work from Turn One? I drive this car very hard sometimes, and would like the extra insurance.

Turn One will take your pump and rework it to their reduced flow. If you're not road racing (spending 10-15 minutes above 4k rpm), you prob don't need it. It won't have any extra durability. Get a PS cooler instead to keep temps down is my advice (I've got both on my car)

I've been trying to context them how much did your rebuild cost?

How much does it run to have the pump reworked? I don't road race, but I do spend a lot of time running the car hard one winding roads when I can. Also, with the upgraded suspension and wider wheel and tire package, it's inevitable that it'll burn out again in a matter of months, maybe a couple of years.

In the end I may just go with a new pump with a lifetime warranty and add the steering cooler. But I'd like to know what my options are before I make my decision.

I don't remember the cost it was probably 8-9 years ago I did this.
