  • Is this a steering rack?

Going to the junk yard, to find a 93-97 LT1 steering rack that will connnect with my linkage. Is this what I'm looking for: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...922370172&rd=1

thats a steering rack for an LS1. why are you looking for an LT1 rack?

Lt1's have a different steering ratio than us, it wont just bolt right up

i want a tighter ratio, and was told that an Lt1 rack would bolt up, and work with my linkage. am i wrong in my research?

I had been saying that the LT1 was the same, but there is some variation. The f41 option has a different part number. Not sure what the difference is though.

Here are some part numbers from the catalog:
(I starred the ones that are y87 part numbers)

        Y87 (v6 performance handling)
        96-99 y87 26044844 *
        00-02 y87 26062311 *

        LT1
        93-97 f41 26044843
        93-97 fe2 26044844 *

        LS1

        98-99 f41 26044843
        00-02 f41 26077996

        98-99 fe2,fe4,fe7 26060047
        00-02 fe2,fe4,fe7 26062311 *

Here is a way to test for a fast ratio rack. The wheel will turn exactly one turn from center to lock. A slow ratio will turn further, but not sure exactly how much.

Depends on if it's F41 or FE2. You should see one of those codes on the option code list.

Either one should work, but if you definitely want the equivalent of a fast ratio y87 then get it off a 93-97 fe2 car. That would be the 26044844.

Spin the wheel to see how many turns from center to lock also...

Now that I think about, I'd sell my y87 rack. It wouldn't clear the headers on the ls1 swap. I've just been putting off posting my for sale stuff...

I don't know off the top of my head, if it will fit or not. I'll check part numbers when I get home.

I would think it would fit, because the LT1 rack is the same for all those years (93-97).

I paid $50 + shipping for my LS1 rack, so I'd be looking for the same thing on my Y87 rack to just be breaking even on it.

I'll post again after I can check part numbers again from home later this evening.

Talk to Hawgs about the 99+ LS1-rack fitment. All I know is 1993-1998 cars and Y87 will bolt right in with no problems.

I can check on that too. Or I can just throw my linkage in with it... Because I swapped to the LS1 linkage when I swapped racks.

But I'm pretty sure it's the same as what you have already. I'll check on that later today and find out.

Base V6 cars (your 94 included because Y87 wasn't avail until 1996) have 16.9:1 steering ratio. Y87 and V8 cars have 14.3:1 steering ratio. It takes about 1/2 turn out of the steering wheel. Meaning it takes 2 1/4 turns left to right instead of 2 3/4..

so, anyways, will your rack fit mine, and how hard is the linkage to change, i would prefer to leave that alone (linkage) and just swap the rack, so will urs fit? also, then i guess i will get the rack off the 95 z, because i know the linkage is the same, and rack will bolt up fine!

Linkage is the same on all 4th gen f-bodies. the only difference is the front suspension on the LS1 cars.. *shakes head* when I say an LT1 steering rack will fit, it will fit.
