  • Power steering making a low pitch noise when turning

Sometimes when I am sitting still or going slow through a parking lot or something and turn my wheel, I get a low pitch noise. It seems to be worse when I am sitting still. Sometimes I can give it a full turn and it will make the noise the whole time I am turning. My car is a 2000 model and has 60,000 miles on it. It is not the tires rubbing, it sounds like something rubbing that is not greased or something. It is a pretty loud sound. Any ideas? Thanks!

My Camaro did a rubbing noise starting around 3,000 miles. It had never done it before until one day I was parking and every time I would turn the wheel it would vibrate really bad and make this rubbing noise until I stopped turning the wheel. Did it nonstop in foward or reverse and again when I left, but after a minute of driving it went away.

It would do it while backing up making slow turns for like a half second and then stop. I never found out what caused it, but it wasn't as bad and it hasn't been doing it recently. It was just strange how it never did it until it did it really badly repeatedly one day, then just did it occasionaly after that. I think it might be heat related. The only person I've found who had a similar problem was DravensBird02, and when he was having the problem the weather where he lives was similar to what it was here.

your ps pump might be going out. thats the problem with mine. it makes a really loud sound when im turning out of a parking lot or when i dont use the gas, and it makes a noise at idle that i can barely hear.

Check the line going to the pump for leaks. I had the same thing and it turned out to be my line leaking... much cheaper than replacing the pump :D

IF your cranking the wheel all the way to one side, thats what is making the noise, and its NOT good for it and will kill it. And its normal.

My car does it too...only when the car is warmed up though.

Happens when I turn though I only hear it at low speeds. Sort of tough to explain the noise...like a low, soft, feathery noise. Almost sounds like a mouse being tortured. Heh...bad description.
