  • OEM tire sizes

I see at Tire Rack that 2 sizes of tires were offered on base 97 Firebird.
I have 235-55x16 currently as the orginal owner replaced OEM tires with these. he didnt tell me if the OEMs were same size. Car has the Y-87 option so Im guessing its the correct tire.
Anyway Im going to replace these tires and am thinking that 235-60x16 are cheaper and an inch taller. Im ready for alittle more ground clearance as with 4 adults in car it scrapes alot.
any input on tire size and cheapest place to get them.
Local Tire Kingdom will match tire rack price but just checking to see if anyone out there is cheaper.

Going taller will throw off your speedometer slightly and may give you handling/rubbing problems. I would invest in a stiffer set of rear springs instead.

I can fix the speedo correction,I install electronic speedo correction devices.
Im not sure that 1 inch taller is a problem on rubbing. I am now looking at 245-50x16 KDWS. I have same on my Aurora and love them. Has anyone used this combo on stock wheels without any problem?

That tire size is not a problem... I work at Tire Kingdom by the way. Yeah, we have no problem matching tire rack's price. That tire size was actually the stock size on most z28's, and trans am's. Good luck with your tire choice. ;)

Edit: check out this webpage. It will help alot with your tire selection.:

My latest search has netted another choice.
          BFG traction TA.
It has a higher treadwear(440) than the KDWS(400).
I dont need all out performance but do want a real good wet weather tire(I live in Fla where it rains alot).
          Any one tried these?

My favorites for florida daily driving and pretty good performance were indy 500s 255-50 on the stock 16's. Really good traction all the time reguardless of weather. Check em out.

You can also go with 245/50/r16 or 255/50/16.

I just bought falcon ziex 512's in the 255/50r16 for 328.04 delivered from

              http://www.discounttiredirect.com/di...55&ar=50&rd=16

These tires are only 2 tenths smaller than the 235/55r16 that I had but they are a little wider. I put my new tires on 10/9/04. Just got them. I have a open rear and can't break the tires loose with moderate to high throtle and clutch release even on corners, haven't tried to really peel out yet with these. The stock 235's goodyear eagles sucked, I could break them loose anytime I wanted to. My recomendation is the 255/50r16

^^^ Forgot to mention that. 255/50's are definately the best way to go. Feels so much better, and I think it looks a lot better too. Wider = Better.

I still didnt get any answer as to what tire my car came with.
Did the 235-55x16 come with the Y-87 package?
Is there a code on my build sheet that tells me OEM tire size?

if you want rain tracktion the only way to go is the Good YEAR Eagle F1 GS-D3 tires

I LOVE THEM and the only reson i have to slow down in rain is if it's raingin so hard i can't see lol

check out my web page for pics of them

Base model was equiped with 215/60 R16 as standard
Y-87 replaced these with 235/55 R16 (not sure of speed rating)
                          Formula's and T/A's had 245/50 R16 (Think they were Z rated)
                          WS6 models had 275/40 ZR17

                          I currently have 225/50 ZR16's on Front and 255/50 ZR16's on rear.

(I'd have put 255's on the front, but they're a very rare size here and not usually carried by Tyre shops.)

I believe for a lot of years Z28's had the 235/55/16 standard with the 245/50/16 optional. T/A's came with 245/50/16. The 235/55/16 on the Y87's were Goodyear Eagle GA's with a speed rating of T (up to 118 MPH, hence the speed limiter around that point). The 235/55/16's on the Z28's were Eagle RSA'a all season and perhaps Eagle GA's on older models. 245/50/16's could be had in either RSA's or Eagle GSC's which were the dry weather only tire. Both are Z rated. 275/40/17 tires were Eagle F1's, of course Z rated.
