96 Camaro with 235/55/R16 on there now. I am sure many of you have gone to wider tires. Anyone have any suggestions? Wider tires would be nice, But I don't want to push my luck with clearance and tire rub. Also, what is the maximum backspacing for new rims?

Depends on the wheel width. Offset rather than backspacing might be more useful for you. Typical offset is anywhere from +36mm to +50mm.
The SS runs 17x9 wheels I believe. With 275/40 tires.
Some people run 17x11, but they have to do a little trimming in the front fenderwell....
Currently I'm running 18 x 9 wheels and don't rub. I'm thinking of some 17x11's for autocrossing though, with 313/35 tires.

How would 17x9 in the front and 17x11 in the back work?? Would work fine, no trimming needed. 17x11 in the back just looks mean.

I had ZR1's on my car. I ran the following with out any rubbing, griding, or other. They just bolted on and fit perfect.
Front: 17x9.5 56mm offset w/ 275/40/17 about 11 inches total width.
Rear: 17x11 50mm offset w/315/35/17 about 12.5 inches total width.
I looked amazing. You will loose a few HP like 3-5 because those big wheels and tires weight around 60lbs each. At least mine did. And your car will suck a bit more gas too.
I have seen a few cars that had the same set up only with 335/35/17's on the rear. Those are around 13.5 wide... looks like steam rollers. LOL
If you want just a wider tire on the 16x8 wheel you can go up to a 255/50/16 and be about 10.5 inches acoss versus the factory 235/55/16 that is around 9.7 or so. This will keep your speedo about the same too. The 245/50/16 also works. You will sit about 1/4 inch lower though from the slightly shorter side wall. But, either one will work.
Hope that helps. Thanks,
JAM
02 Firebird GT

I have 18x10.5 in the back and 18x9.5 in the front with 275 and 245 rubber. My shocks are set stiff enough so that I don't have a problem with the tires and the fenders. I had horribly worn shocks that didn't work worth **** that let my rear tires move 3" to contact the fenderwell. Haven't had problems since. Check my site for pics of the wider tires.98 Bright Red Camaro
Too many mods to list....check my website

keep in mind that you want to keep your tire circumference aka "outside rolling diameter," as close to stock as possible, or else your speedometer will not be accurate...that can be easily remedied with a speedo recalibrator.
55 is just the % of rubber from the over all size used for the wall, thus going to a bigger size of 255 or 275 will increase or decrease the circumference of your tire depending on your aspect ratio. and put out your odometer and speedometer way out of spec. Your best bet is to match your stock circumference as close as you can to your stock size circumferece.
Example Tire Size: 255/50R17 100V or 255/50VR17
The first number is the overall width of the tire in millimeters, measured from sidewall to sidewall. To convert to inches, divide by 25.4. In the example above, the width is 255mm or 10.04".
Overall Width: 255 [mm] / 25.4 [mm per inch] = 10.04 inches wide
The second number is the aspect ratio. This is a ratio of sidewall height to width. In the example above, the tire is 255 mm or 10.04" wide, multiply that by the aspect ratio to find the height of one sidewall. In this case:
Section Height (Sidewall Height): 10.04" x 50% = 5.02" high
The last number is the diameter of the wheel in inches. To figure the overall diameter of a tire, take the sidewall height and multiply by 2, (remember that the diameter is made up of 2 sidewalls, the one above the wheel, and the one below the wheel) and add the diameter of the wheel to get your answer.
Overall Diameter: (5.02" x 2) + 17" = 27.04" tall
so my stock circumference is 26.177" with 235/55/16's.
with 245/50/16's the circumference would be 25.645
with 255/50/16's the circumference would be 26.039
with 265/50/16's the circumference would be 26.433
with 275/45/16's the circumference would be 25.744
with 315/40/16's the circumference would be 25.921
that is pretty interesting how the diameter basically stays the same with all the numbers changing like that

for stock rims, 255-50-16's will fit all the way around, and are about the same tire height, plus or minus a few 1/100 of an inch.
different rims will change things a bit. 275-40-17 tires will fit on 17x9 rims up to 17x10.5 rims, and are about 25.5 inches in diameter, making the car sit about 1/4" lower. the closest, widest tire to our stock tire diameter that can be put on 17" rims is 285-40-17's, and those would go good on 17x9.5 rims. remember, weight will go up w/ larger tires and rims.
My idea, is to get forged rims for my car. SSR c-1's are 2 lbs lighter than our stock 16x8's, yet the SSR's are 18x9.5. This helps reduce rotating weight, giving me better handling as well as keeping my hp numbers up. The tires I plan to run on these are 275-35-18's in front and 275-40-18's on the rear. The front is about 25.5" in diameter, droping my front ride height by 1/4". the rear is about 26.65" in diameter, making the rear go up by 1/4". the taller rear tires is for better tire wear, a slightly larger contact patch, and better cruising rpm's, as well as reducing some of the monstrous wheel gap between the fender and the tire. thr fronts are smaller to give me a smaller turning radius, lower center of gravity in front(where most of the weight is), and for better looks.
since more of the lighter rim is taking up where the sidewall would be on my stock rims, I hope that the rim/tire combo will be close to the same weight as stock, despite being larger and wider than stock.2001 Arctic White Firebird
More mods than I\'m allowed to list!

Ok, I'm getting 17x9" rims in the front and 17x10.5" rims in the back. I'm fine with the width of my wheels in the front, but I want the rear tires to be wider than stock by like an inch.
