  • tire sizes and how they effect me?

Im going to purchase tires today for my firebird. The front tires are worn out badly. They are 225/60/16. My rear tires are fine, they are 235/55/16.

If I keep the same size on front or goto 235/60/16 will there be any negative effects as opposed to going to the same size as the rear?

    Thank You.

You mean 235-50-16's all around...right? A 235-60 will have a slightly higher sidewall. Prbably no real big effects, but if you want *and can afford* all 4 tires, go with 245-50-16's (or even better, 255-50-16's) all around. Better traction, and looks better than the cheezy 235's.

There was a website that showed the difference in tires and how they affect the speedo in a % I can't seem to find it though.

You didn't mention 215/60-16 which is one appropriate choice, since it's a stock size. I know most here simply don't like to run them, but I do in winter. And if you value ride and rain handling above all else, they're the hot setup.

Mykal - the best idea is to have all 4 the same size. Among other things, it lets you rotate them properly.

Well with an 8" wide rim is a 215 safe? I prefer to run a 225 at the minimum on an 8" wheel (which is what is DOT recommended accoriding to Tirerack.

Interesting point. The funny thing is that GM shipped out 90+% of their V6 fbodies with 215s. But almost all the 215s I looked at specced a max rim of 7.5.

The exception was one model of Eagle GAs, which had a max rim of 8.5 and which I think is what GM used.

So maybe 215s aren't a good idea unless you use one of the rare ones specced for the 8 inch rims.

Basically I was trying to save some cash. I planned on buying 4 new tires next month. My front tires didnt make it though. I went to a used tire place and got 225/55/16 for up front and kept the 235/55/16 in the back for now.

I didnt realize I could run 245s or 255s on the stocker rims.

                    Thanks for all the help.
