  • Check out your suspension/brakes every now and then...

Hey guys, I work on my car a bit, every now and then.

But friday around 5:30 pm I was driving, testing an in car camera setup I made, got on the gas and then I heard a loud grinding noise from the rear. I was getting pissed because its sounds alot like rear end noise, I coasted into a parking lot few 100 ft. downt he street. makes the noise only when I move the car. Sounds very much rear end problem since its definitley from the rear.

Get out see if there is anything obvious, then notice one of my brake calipers is off kilter.

Jacked car up and pulled the wheel, one of the rear caliper bolts is missing and the other one is very loose. Caliper got torqued and was grinding on the wheel. The lot I pulled into was behind a Tire Kingdom, took out the 2nd bolt, and went up and asked if they had any I could buy or have. Guy said if he had it I could have it but only had a Ford and toyota caliper bolt different.

So its about 6p, and I am racing my car the next day and have to get up at 5am to start driving to make registration and tech. Dealership is closed, all major autostores don't have it, but could order it, checked their bolts on the shelf, checked the "HELP!" section lots of other bolts including few caliper bolts but nothing I needed.

Hit up Lowes, figured out the size and they had a bolt I could use, but needed washers to space the length right. Home Depot wouldn't have it, it was metric and home depot doesn't have that much metric crap.

Long story short, check out your major suspension components, and brakes. Make sure everythings tightened. I have never touched the rear brakes on my car and they were never touched at a shop to my knowledge, 100% factory original.

same thing happen to me few months back, my front caliper bolt came out as i was braking. The dealorship said it would be like 3-5 days before they could get one in, so i went to home depot and found the exact same one.

did u use thread locker on the bolt before u reinstalled the new bolts????? if u didnt, they will come back out sooner or later, no matter how tight u think u have them. Trust me, it happened to me, but this time i caught it just in time before it came out. go back and use thread locker.

go to lowes and see if you can find a rated bolt that is the same. i have gone to lowes to replace bolts before. give it a shot, nothing to lose.

        Re the Lowe's idea:

Caliper bolts are very highly stressed. Their design often involves more than the rating, the bolts are often shaped (tapered) to handle stress a certain way.

Personally, I'd want the factory stuff for this one.

I had to get my made. I stripped one getting the caliper off when I did my rotor/pads change. all the local parts stores, the dealerships, and home improvement centers had no clue how to get it. I did find one at Pitkins, but it seemed too lightweight so I passed it up. so I went to a buddy at a custom corvette place and they machined one down for me. rounded the end just like the stock. it works... has been for 2 years.

If anyone find out how to get them, an exact part number please post. I remember I did a search back when I needed it. hopefully if someone finds it and posts it, it'll help someone else out.
