  • Annoying rear brake chirp, please give advise:

I replaced the rear last month and ever since, I have an annoying chirp everytime the wheel turns as I'm driving and NOT braking. Whenever I hit the brakes, it goes away.
When I installed the new rear, I put new brake pads on with shims, and after hearing the chirping from the brakes, I took them out and put high temp silicone on the back of the pads, but the problem is still there.
Is it time for new rotors?? Or is there something else I'm overlooking?

I noticed something when my car was on the lift at Firestone the other day. There are springs on my rear disc brakes that release the tension from the brakes when you disengage the parking brake. My springs have become weak and don't fully release the brakes when I disengage my parking brake. This causes my rear wheels to squeak sometimes because the pads ride on the rotors. Could be your problem. The springs are like $14 each at the dealership and around $20 total from GMPartsdirect.com. Haven't bought new ones yet though.

hey dojo2k, how hard is it to put the springs in? It may be my problem, and I like to start with the cheapest things first. I see you didn't buy them yet, but do you or anyone else know the installation procedure?

      ps- thanx for the reply!

Ok, I know that this is an 8 year old thread, but I've exhausted the search options, and this is the only thread that comes close to my problem.

In fact, it's exactly my problem. My drivers rear brake squeaks as I'm coasting and accelerating, but goes away as soon as I hit the brakes. I recently (1700 miles ago) got new pads/rotors put on.

So, did this fix the problem? Or did it turn out to be something else? I'd like to get this squeak fixed by the 4th of July, so any replies would help!

the squeak is almost always caused by rust on the rotors, take the rotors off and scrape/grind/hit all of the rust off around the edges

im unsure of these "springs" because the brakes and the parking brake have nothing to do with each other, the parking brake is a drum and doesnt hold the brake bad to the rotor. not to mention the squeak would go away if the e-brake was hit a tiny bit, and im betting that it doesnt.

Re: Annoying rear brake chirp, please give advise:

I was looking at the passenger side brake system for reference, and the outer lip of the rotor is tapered, while on the drivers side it is, but to a much lesser extent. Could this be the cause as well?

And the rotors are quite rusty... I'm actually disappointed with how quickly they've rusted in comparison to my old rotors.

              its possible, but doubtful.

i would just try to knock the rust off as much as possible. i have had this problem with my car, and its quite embarrassing driving around with it squeaking so loudly.

Do you mean rust directly on the contact surface of the rotor, or closer to the center hub / outer edges?

the outer edges where the "cooling fins" are

i dont really advise doing this, but next time i have my wheels off im taking an angle grinder to them

Take it back to where you had the brakes installed. It sounds like the caliper slide is sticking, and not fully releasing when you let off the brake. Cleaning and greasing the caliper slide will usually fix this.

Yeah, I don't think I'll go that far, but I'll definitely get the rust off. I was driving around yesterday, and didn't notice it... maybe I just jiggled something into place while I was screwing around with it.

I would, except those 1700 miles on them were driving halfway across the country, over a couple days. My mechanic is in Iowa, I'm now in D.C. Hoping to fix it as cheaply as possible, but like I said above... it's gone now, so unless it comes back, I'm considering it not a problem!
