Koni Shocks

I just read in the tech database that some f-bodys came with koni double adjustable shocks stock...wtf?....is this a good upgrade and are these readily available in the aftermarket? what spring package came on these?

They arent worth the money you are going to spend on them. They adjust rebound and compression. The only reason i could see you getting these shocks would be if you were really dedicated to AutoCross racing, like SCCA. On your daily driver i wouldnt get anything but but Bilstein's, Koni (Yellow's, single adjustable), or some KYB AGX shocks.

The Koni's are some of the best shocks you can buy given you can a) afford them, and b) adjust them properly for your springs.

I personally find the Bilstein shocks, or a well revalved set of Bilstein shocks, perfectly adaquest for stock or aftermarket performance springs respectively. Sadly from what I've heard about the KYB AGX shocks is that they're nothing but *ahem* poo and should not be used. The adjustability on a KYB only adjusts the FIRMNESS of the shock, not the actual rebound or compression, so you end up blowing shocks easily trying to make it compress less or rebound more.

The Koni's are great shocks they're just simply high in price. You really don't need to pay that much to get a similar spring/shock capability though, thats why most people find they can go with a good set of revalved Bilsteins and be perfectly satisfied [img]smile.gif[/img] .

The only thing adjustability offers you is a quick way to go from dragrace to autocross to roadrace to daily driver settings in a couple of minutes without swapping shocks. Again, for most people this is not a necessary thing to have, but I guess it is pretty novel [img]smile.gif[/img]

The GM konis aren't that much...they're only 450 for 4 from gmpartsdirect.com and that's cheaper than bilstiens and HALs

Wait ... the Double-Adjustable Konis found on the 1LEs are $450 for 4? I thought one koni (DA) could run nearly that to begin with ...

Though, remember, a HAL set is coilovers, and SA ... Konis are just shocks.

It does... from GMparts direct a full set of Koni's would cost over $3,000 - not worth it.

You can buy Koni DA's for around $700-800 for all 4 from LG.

My mistake, i put the wrong part numbers in gmpartsdirect.com, but they're not 3000, they're 1400 for 4. But my original question still stands, what's the difference (if any) from the konis that came on the 1LE package as opposed to the aftermarket double adjustables.

I believe the aftermarket version is stiffer on its softest setting... Keep in mind you need to know a lot about the shocks and springs you're using to properly adjust those shocks - its not an easy task.

i have the double adjustables on my car in the front the were expensive i think like $442 or something thats why i only bought the front ones i had bilstein revalved before and they suck. the Koni's are absoulutly incredible but i do alot of autocrossing i wouldntsuggest putting them on a daily driver un less youve got the cash

What i'm really looking for is the best combo daily driver and performance shock. I can't go full out performance because the roads in mississippi are so horrible that i need some cushion. I'm more concerned about performance than price. Are konis the best?

Yes for a daily driver they're probably a hassle, and for that kind of money you can buy 4 pretty good shocks that aren't tunable but will still deliver good performance [img]smile.gif[/img]

For serious autocross though, Konis are probably the only way to go - you can only do so much with tire pressure :D

If you're just looking for an all around good at everything but not best at anything shock - there are a few good choices. The Bilstein HD standby comes to mind - while it isn't the best shock on the planet it seems to do well and satisfy most people who don't race every sunday [img]smile.gif[/img] .

It just really depends on how deep your pocketbook is, what kind of springs you have, and what level of performance you desire out of new shocks to determine what shocks you should buy.

Koni's are generally considered to be very stiff shocks - they will not ride "cushy" at all, and are meant for track use. For some the ride is fine, for others its too stiff - go figure [img]smile.gif[/img] .
