ABS Disable

Anybody disable their ABS? If so how? And can you still re-enable the system later on?

Just a thought. A non-ABS car (with the properly skilled driver) can stop safer and sometimes shorter too in certain conditions.

That is true if the driver knows every little road condition before he or she hits it such as a race track. Tire pressure, temp of tire, temp of ground, water on ground, oil, gravel, black ice, weight of car at the time, tred left on tires all play a part. Its no wonder way people spend more money to have ABS because it is impossible to know every thing out there. Its an aid to help you, I suggest to let it be. There is a way but its not good for your car and your airbags will not work either. Best to just forget about removing the ABS and look for other mods to do ;) .

That used to be true, and still is with some cheapo ABS. But the very best ABS is better than the very best driver. When ABS is legal in F1 (they change the rules sometimes) every driver uses it.

The ABS on 4th gens is pretty damn good. I'd be surprised if you could beat it on dry pavement, and amazed if you could beat it on wet. That's straight line. If you have to dodge something while you're braking, ABS wins every time.

I was thinking the same thing to run during AUtocross to see if it would help any. Sometiems i woudl prefer the car to skid, then fo rthe abs to kick in lcoking up, and realsing a brake eradically.

If I rember right the fuse panel under the hood has a small fuse apnel, on the driver side, I thin the ABS system fuse is in there. If not maybe check out hte ABS unit itslef, and see if there is a wiring harness to disconnect.

I have had the opportunity to chat with highway patrol officers in my state ;)

It is there opinion, and they have accident data that backs them up, that ABS does not reduce the # of accidents. They did agree with me that there is a time and place for ABS (weather, unexperienced, etc.).

One of them spoke of an instance when a young child wondered onto the highway. It was the officers best judgement that stopping was the best possible option. In the past they would have "threshold" braked to a stop. In their new GM (Bosch ABS) he was unable to stop and nearly killed 4 or so people in the process.

So, we all agree there is a safe way to disable ABS?

Don't forget that if your front wheels lockup and you skid, you have no steering capabilities with your car. With ABS, your wheels continue to spin, giving you steering ability. Steering ability can prevent an accident very well...I would suggest leaving it on while on public streets, but turning it off if on the AutoX track.
