ABS causing loss of brakes

Ok guys I hope anyone may have some info here. Just recently I began getting low tration lights and ABS INOP lights at speeds less then 10 mph, usually when i am turning in a parking space or pulling up to a stop. And it activates the ABS, which I don't think is supposed to happen at such low speeds, well anyways it is like the valve is stuck, because when it happens i have no brakes. I mean no brakes what so ever. I have slammed concrete curbs three times, before I got enough sense to pull the ABS fuses until I get this figured out.

Has this happened to anyone before or does anyone have any ideas. Is it just a wheel sensor messing up. If so, shouldn't there be some type of fail safe to prevent the loss of brakes. Please ideas guys. I have a appointment for the car on thurs, but I would really like to fix this on my own.

I had a firend this same exact thing happened with his jeep.. it was due to an abs reluctor ring being messed up.. check to see your sensors are plugged in.. may want to completely unplug and plug them back in.. also check for a damaged reluctor ring.. you will have to pull the rear diff cover to check the rear end.

hey vtv6firebird I have the same exact problem as you and it's very scary. I have heard it is either caused by a bad sensor (there are three; one for each front brake and one in the differential) or a bad reluctor ring. I'm not exactly sure what my problem is caused by because I have yet to bring it in. Please let me know what the mechanics find as the problem and how much it will cost to fix. Also how do you disable the abs? Which fuses do I pull? Will doing this throw any codes such as a low trac light? Hope to hear from you soon.

lately ive been having the exact same problem
im not sure if its the reluctor ring, or the sensors, but either way, my brakes either dont work, or work very little under 5 mph...

I am doing the nissan Procap auto program. ABS is a completely different syster than braking. It piggybacks. WHen your ABS light comes on, that means you have no abs. your brakes should work as usual unless you have a brake problem thats f@*&in up your ABS signal form the wheel sensors. So it shouldnl't be just an ABS prob. The ABS might be bad too, but it shouldn't effect normal braking.

if you put to big of tirs on the car the abs will screw up i know this for a fact i did it and changed back to stock cause it was being all stupid

I've had the same problem for the past month. I keep some distance between me and the car in front of me when I stop. The mech. said there wasn't much to be done until I started getting a consistent ABS INOP light. Well, it's getting to be a consistent thing now and I'll have to take it in soon(unless I just disable the ABS). Would it be hard to replace the sensors myself? And how much do they cost?

Well, my problem has become less frequent now. thank goodness. Only problem is there is no way to get it diagnosed. It won't ever happen when I take it to a shop and they just hand the car back to me and basically look at me like I am crazy and tell me nothing is wrong with my car.

There seems to be several people out there with this problem, hopefully someone will come up with some good ideas on what else to check here soon.

The problem will eventually get worse with time, (assuming that it's the same as mine.) I have days where it's nonexistent, then there are other days where it happens so much that my ABS INOP light kicks in. Then again, there are other people here who have pulled the sensors and cleaned them or just reset the PCM and all was well. [img]tongue.gif[/img]
