my tires are pretty worn out, i have 245/50/16's on the back and 235's on the front
they're the stock 5-spoke alloy wheels
what's the widest tire that will fit the wheels?
I was looking around summit racing, and they say that a 295 can fit on an 8 inch rim. They have BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires that are 295/50/16 (bigger tire, so you would lose some torque) that can fit on a rim between 8 and 10 inches wide.
I am considering these now (rear only), because then I can switch to 3.42's and not throw my speedo off. (3.42's knock my speedo of about 5.8%, these tires kick it back the other way 5.5%, making a total difference of .3%)
I am also thinking maybe I should go with these and a 3.73 gear, because it would be closer to me swtiching from 3.23 to 3.42, because the tires offset a bunch of the error.
Either way, when I hit the track, I can put some smaller (not too much thinner, though) tires on and have a nice change in gear. Then, when I put the big guys back on for normal driving, the gears are closer to normal.
What do you guys think?

If you get those 295s to fit on the stock rim, it's gonna look like you're riding around on big black balloons. I would be so scare of the tire separating from the rim at that size.

If you put 295's on your stock 16" rims, that's the sound you'll hear eventually when the tires separate from the rims. I would advise against it.

255/50 is the widest our 16x8" wheel can handle in a DOT legal tire. P265/45 and wider have been run in the past using Kumho Victoracers, but they have a far different sidewall composition which allows for the mismatch in width to work okay.
295/50 might fit on an 8" wide rim, but that's speaking of a drag tire, that has a totally different sidewall (which I don't think will be DOT legal). A normal 295/50 street tire would pop off an 8" rim. Also, with a sidewall that tall on your 16" rim, I'm almost positive the tire would rub the fender on the launch if not always. My 275/50/15 drag radials cut it close.
