265/40YR17?

Will this size fit, right now on my car i have 275/40-17 on my car and have the 17" SS Rims, so will these fit the car?

I have the tires that come with the 96SS and am switching to the Bridgestone Potenza S-03'S. A friend of mine has them on his 99 vette and swears by them. The only problem is that he has 18" rims on the back and i have 17" all around (the 275/40/17 size doesnt exist). I figured since theres only a difference of 1 cm and the base 96 camaro came with the same rims as the z28 had had 1cm narrower tires that it could work. Just seeing if anyone had that size on.

sure it does, go on www.tirerack.com and look for that size. I just ordered 4 new tires for 17's 275/40/17.

Methodman, the 275/40/R17 size doesnt exist on the Bridgestone Potenza S-03 tires. Other tires do have it but the S03's dont havent introduced that size on the 17" rim yet [img]redface.gif[/img]

Heres a better solution, just buy another brand. Your probably going to pay out the @$$ for those things. 265/40Y17 is a little lower than the stock ride height. It will change your speedo a little. Not recommended at all.

How does it change the speedometer? Do 275's also, or is it the change in rim size.

If you already have the size above on your car, then why wouldn't a size smaller tire fit??

I had a friend who swiched to a smaller tire (295 vs. the old 275's (both 17")) and he said that the tire was too narrow for the wheel, I dunno, this is my first time dealing with tire replacement and I'm not the expert in the sizes.

How does the height differ and how off is the speedo (mph)?

because the height of the tire (40 series, 45 series, etc) is based on the width. for example, a 215/40 would look paper thin while my friends say my 275/40/17's on the back look like 45 series tires. going with a narrower tire and sticking with a 40 series tire wouldn't be as tall as the previous tires, thus throwing your speedo off.

To find the sidewall height take the first number and multiply it with the second number as a percent, so 275/40 would be 275 * .40. The 275/40R17s are the same ride height as the stock. The tire sidewall is less, but the rims are larger. so in the 17 in wheel size, you want a sidewall (the 275*.40 etc.) number to be 110. You can go any size that will fit on your rim, and you ride height will be the same as long as that number when multiplied is 110.

Since they're both 40 series tires it will throw your speedo off about 10/270 or about 4% (too fast). Your gearing will also be about 4% (about 0.1) lower and your car will be about 10mmX0.40 = 4mm lower.

So after hearing about the 110 mark I've realized that I must have been off for awhile. 235/50/R16 was the original tire size (235 x .40=94) on my car. How can i accuratly get the speedo to be calibrated properly. Should I take it to the local Chevy dealer and have them look at it?
