  • Quicker Sterring Ratio, what cars can it be found in?

I'm gonna do a local salvage yard sweep and was wondering what cars the quicker sterring ratio can be found in that would fit in my '02? And is it the sterring rack I want or the steering gear box?

my 97 rs camaro has it, not sure about 98+ v6 cars i just know the base camaro's did not get it in 97

called the sport steering option look up the rpo code to help you locate it easier.

The Y87 comes with sport steering. I still aren't sure whether I have it on my car though, cause I got one of those ghetto cars from 2000 that wasn't Y87, yet still came with 3.42's and LSD, also got the upgraded tires from Y87 as well. Only problem is I dunno the code for the sport steering so I can't figure if I have it. If anyone knows the code you can just look at the doors on the cars to see.

Did it come standard in all Z28s and TAs? Is it the rack or the gear box?

              Stock V6 - 16.9:1

              V8 and Y87 - 14.4:1 (quicker steering response)

              This applies to ALL years.

BTW, all this information is available in the Technical Database.

THe information not in the tech database that has yet to be answered if it is the actual sterring rack that would need to be replaced or the steering gear box. I assume it's the gear box.

Or have they incorporated the gearing into the rack? I haven't looked.

Rack and pinion steering has no gear box. You need to replace the entire rack housing.

I don't think its a worthwhile upgrade unless you could get the parts for really cheap. I think going from 16.9:1 to 14.4:1 amounts to about a 1/4 turn difference on either side.

I personally prefer the slower rack because its easier to drive at higher speeds...

Thank You. I never thought of that. Used to working on a chevelle and el camino w/ the steering gear box separate from the rack.

But not as easy to get those wheels turned the other way to compensate for oversteer.
