  • Poor Braking Performance

My brakes don't seem to be stopping the car like they used to. I used to be able to activate the ABS on a quick stop, and I can no longer do this. If it was simply from improved traction it would be fine, but I don't think it is. The performance is also inconsistant, sometimes they grab better than others.

The pedal feels a little spongy, and I can actually bottom it out. I can feel the pedal hit some sort of physical stop, not just a pressure build up, when I press down. Can anyone else do that on their car? Fluid level in master cylinder is fine. I haven't had the lines opened, so I don't know where air would be from. The current rotors and pads have about 8k miles on them, and look to be fine. I don't see any leaks either. Would a booster or vacumm problem cause any of this? Would that allow me to bottom out the pedal?

I really feel like the car is becoming un-safe with the increased stopping distance and inconsistant performance. Any info, past experience, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :D And it is a 94 with drums in the rear, incase that will make a difference.

What would go wrong with the master cylinder to cause this? Is there any way to test it in the car?

Anyone else with suggestions? The fact that I can bottom out the pedal, before pressure build up stops it from going down any further, has me really concerned. I don'think I would be in good shape in a panic stop situation.

      Thanks for the help.

I'm not really sure....if the mastercylinder is going bad, it may be letting air into your brake lines. Make sure all mounting nuts are tight

        It could also be..
        -deteriorated rubber brake hoses
        -incorrect shoe or pad clearance
        -clogged reservoir vent hole
-deformed rubber brake lines (kinks in them)
        -soft or swollen caliper seals
-poor quality brake fluid, bleed the system and put in some new Dot 3 fluid.

Brakes might need to be adjusted
make sure all brake lines are still connnected like they're supposed to be

-seems like alot could be a determining factor. Personally with the brakes that way, I'd get it professionally repaired..Like you said, I wouldn't want anything to go wrong in a dangerous situation. Hope it helps
