Can rear wheel studs on drum brakes be replaced without pulling the axles? I would think so ...

Nope, but pulling the axles is really pretty simple. I have switched mine before and was surprised at how little you have to do.

I have yet to pull a rear axle to replace a stud. Do you guys have some special kit on there or something? Pull the drum and take a look. There should be a gap in the brake linkage big enough for the full length of that stud. Line the stud up with the gap and whack it with a mallot. Put the new stud in the hole, put about 5 washers on it and tork down a lug nut. You will see it seat itself on the back of the hub. I know the danger, but I'd almost rather drive with 4 lug nuts than pull the rear axle.

I don't think that you will be able to squeeze them out on our cars.

Thanks for the tip. Now ... how can I get the lug off the stud, if the lug just spins? Gotta get the spinning lug off before I can remove the wheel, drum, and broken stud.

So your wheel is still on? Just cut the nut off with a dremel or something similar. Then you take off the drum cover and then follow the steps in my sig for removing the axle. It's very easy. The studs are part of the axle you can't just replace the studs. Unless there is something I'm totally unaware off.

Am I alone here? I've pressed on hundreds of wheel studs. Just one of the byproducts of working at a shop for 10 years. Getting the lug off is going to be a nightmare. We used an air chisel.
