  • Brakes "freeze" with cold weather

What can I say...the weather here in Massachusetts is less than appealing. Lately, the weather has been 30 below with windchill. When the weather gets to be that cold I have a problem. When I first start my car on very cold mornings and go to use the brakes, the pedal just "freezes"...it won't move. Finally, after pumping it repeatedly they work fine. What causes this? Do any of you guys have similar problems?

The e-brake can freeze up, I wouldn't use it in supercold weather... Are you saying the pedal sticks to the floor?

Describe your problem a little more.

I had an old Isuzu Trooper and the bar that the brake half moved on was a bit rusty...I was living in the salt belt at the time, similar to you....so the brakes would not move smoothly when it was cold.....but that may not be your problem....two things can happen in cold weather. The lubricant on the brake parts could be thickening too much and may need a "freshening up" or you have a but load of moisture in your brake fluid (brake fluid absorbs/pulls a lot of moisture from it's environment, that is why you should replace the fluid every couple of years) and it is either crystalizing and causing it to thicken, or you are actually getting iced clumps and the pressure from you pumping the barakes warms the fluid enough to melt the ice....

Just my $0.02, but I could be wrong.
