• My abs inop light came on

Tonight, it snowed pretty bad here in the Burgh, and i was going up a hill, but only made it half way, so i made a u-turn, and came back down sliding. I felt the pedal pulsate from the abs, and when i got to the bottom, I notice that the abs inop light is on and stayed on. I finally got home after getting stuck on the highway, doing a 180 spin out in the middle lane. Thank god I didn't hurt my baby. The light stayed on though, even the next day when I started it up. My car does that all the time after slippery driving. I would have to say slow down and start braking sooner.

pull the fuse out for a couple of hours then put it back in, mine started doing that every couple of days, then i pulled the fuse for a day (didnt drive it with the fuse out) and it never happened again.

The weather here in the 'burgh has been real shi**y this winter.

The "ABS INOP" light probably came on when you were spinning em' in the snow/ice. Mine does it all the time (I have to go up a steep hill to get out of my plan). The good thing about it is that it does seem to override the ABS making it possible to stop when you hit the brakes on ice (versus having the ABS actually work causing the pedal pulse under your foot while you are picking up speed trying to decide the "softest" thing to hit).

If you want the ABS operational all you have to do is shut off the car @ the next traffic light and then start it up again.

Great, thanks guys. All I really want is the light to go away. I don't really care about the abs not working. My 3rd gens never had abs. It's funny, I came to work yesterday evening, and it was only raining. When I left, had 3in of snow with solid sheets of ice under it, had no choice but to go up the hill, had to get home, lol. I'll try the fuse and see if that helps, thanks again.

NOSV6, the abs fuse in in the black fuse box under your hood. There was 2 of them there that said abs, so I pulled both of them out overnight, so hopefully tomorrow the light will be gone.

I had both abs fuses I seen under the hood out for over a day, and tonight I had the pos side battery disconnected for over 2hrs, and the light is still on. Should I have done the neg side, or does it really matter. I haven't driven the car since I came home that night slipping and sliding the whole way. Do you think if I drove it around a little with normal conditions, that it may go away?

I've disconnected the battery to try and reset it. I had the 2 5amp abs fuses out under the hood for hours. I pulled out the big block abs fuse for a sec. The fuid level is ok. As stated before, it's not my 3rd brake light. I know my pads are due for a change, could this be the problem? I haven't had the chance to drive it since that night. I'm hoping also if I drive it on normal conditions, that it may go away. It's been way too cold to hose if off here lately. Any other ideas or thoughts would be great. Thanks

Ok, i did check the brake fluid again, and it was a little low, so i topped it off. The light is still on though. Do i need to reset anything now that i topped it off? I did take it through a car wash and that didn't help as some suggested. I don't know what to do now? This really sucks.

I had that same problem last year, my ABS INOP came on and didn't go off for a loong time...

I did solve it and the problem was that the ABS sensors behind the brakes had had some mud or whatever over them. I was changing my pads and took off all four wheels, cleaned everything I could well.

That solved my problem and the light never came back on.

It's normal that you get this INOP light when it's raining or snowing - it get's in the way of the ABS sensors just like mine I suppose.

One suggestion though - don't underestimate it and get it fixed asap coz it makes a hell of a difference in the breaking distance.. From experience

ok heres the prob i had on my abs INOP!!

1. rear wheel speed sensor went bad, bout 30 bucks i think don't quote me but its not much.

2. after that i had the dayum thing come back on, so i took it in and they found under the engine bay somewhere? there was a small wireing harness. 10 bucks, that burnt through, somehow. and had that replaced..

I havent had any trouble since. now i have great controll in ice and snow, well ok not good by any means but i have abs now. and its stayed off for jsut bout 2 yrs now.

Good luck!!!

PS one shop told me that i had to get a new abs computer, after my rear wheel speed sensors were replace, anyways i got a second opinion and yeah it was jsut that wireing harness.
so if they tell you you need a new abs puter, get another opinion.

anyways that was my 6dollars and 2 cents worth
Im spent

Thanks for all the help guys. Just for the hell of it I bought a new abs relay, put it in, and surely enough, the light went away. Thanks again.
