dont make fun, rookie here, but can someone explain to me a few things. 1) what is the width of the stock (the crappy ones with the plastic hubcaps) tires on the v6 camaro. 2) what the numbers in this 255/40HR17 Hankook Ventus HR II mean. Thanks in advance.

255 is the approximate tread width in millimeters.
40 is the approximate percent of the tread width that the tire height is (Whew!):
the tire height is 40% of 255 mm = 102 mm
17 is the wheel diameter in inches
H is a speed rating and R is radial tire
If you need the exact tread width and tire height, they're usually available on the tire manufacturer's website. If you want the corresponding numbers for your tires, they're on the sidewall of the tire.

There are some tire size calculators out there too, that will let you plug in different tire and wheel sizes. One I like will put two side by side, and you can see the differences. http://www.venommotorsports.com/howt...ldiameters.htm
If you have the 235/55/16, then a 255/50 or a 275/45 will be the closest diameter to your stock tires. Which means the speedo and all will still be correct.
A 245/50 will be just a tiny bit smaller (in diameter). It will also be a little wider. The calculator says when you are reading 75mph, you you will actually only be going 73mph.
