• need new shocks

looking at replacement of orginals that have 50K on them.Must be quite worn as the rear jounce bumpers are worn off too.
thinking of getting one of the new car takeoff spring and shock sets from a V-8 car.
How much of an improvement is this and will the springs be too stiff for pleasureable driving?
My wife still drives the car so I dont want it to ride like my 4x4 truck.

dont expect any improvement.. v8 shocks are the same trash they put on the v6's..

spend some money and get a nice set of aftermarket shocks...

i really like bilstines.. honetly.. if i was running with stock springs i would still want them.. they ride really nice..

I can get new V-8 shock and spring takeoffs for $85 a set. Even if the stock V-8 shocks arent that great isnt it worth it for just the springs?
I have a 97 Y-87 droptop so stock springs werent that great anyway.Car seems to bottom out quite easily.

no the V8 spring will give you a worse ride, becuase you need wieght of the v8, the V6 does not wight that much and the front of your car will sit higher, and make the steering jelloish, you could put the in the rear but i would stick with the v6 srping and get some good shocks to go with them

why did they change the spring rates on the 98s even if it has a V-6.Got this info from the specs page.

front
22077189 (39 N/mm, 223 lbs/in) (93-97 V6)

22133438 (45 N/mm, 257 lbs/in) (98-00 V6)

22077197 (51 N/mm, 292 lbs/in) (93-00 V8)

rear

22077418 (16.9 N/mm, 95.4 lbs/in) (93-97 V6)

22077421 (19.9 N/mm, 114 lbs/in) (93-00 V8, 98-00 V6)
stock V8s rear springs are used on 98+ V6 models (114 lbs/in).

The 98+ V6s have stiffer front springs (257 lbs/in) than earlier years.

Y87 cars have same springs as non-Y87.

They changed the spring rates on the V6 so it could share the rear spring with the V8. That neccesitated increasing the front spring rate, and lowering both the front and rear sway bar diameter. Cost cutting measure probably.

OK thanks
So it sounds like best stock setup is the 98 up rear springs,98 up V-6 front springs, retain 97 swaybars, buy new Bilsteins all around. Correct?

v8 shocks will not change the height of your car. only the springs will. just like you dont put lowering shocks in your car to lower it, you put in lowering springs. i went from my old shocks which i had since they were on the car, to new v8 shocks and there was no change in the ride height. trust me. it still wants to scrape every darn curb

i also can say they were definitely an improvement over the old worn out v6 shocks

If you wanna go with versatility, check out the KYB AGX shocks. You can set them at a stiff setting for "spirited" driving or when you wife drives it, set them a little softer. I have them on mine now and they are awesome.
